1999 WYOMING COWGIRL TENNIS
First Day at the Washington State Invitational:The University of Wyoming Cowgirl Tennis team traveled to Pullman, WA tocompete in the Washington State Invitational this past weekend. Theteam saw eleven singles wins and five doubles wins for the tournament.
Day one started with team captain, Melanie Roberts, who played heropponent tough in her first match, but could not pull out a win againstMontana State?s Mariska Steenkamp with a score of 7-5, 4-6, 6-2.However Roberts did defeat her second opponent, Jessica Redding fromMontana 6-2, 6-3.
Sarah Kay, playing in the number two position for the Cowgirls, foundvictory in both of her matches, advancing her to the next round in daytwo. She defeated her first opponent Alexandria Jensen from MontanaState, in a three set match, scoring 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. She also defeatedZeljka Vidic from Idaho 6-2, 6-1 in her second match.
Sophomore, Sofia Espinosa, split her matches with one victory overBarbara Kukilkova from Idaho 6-4, 6-2. However, she was defeated byBoise State?s Renate Stoop in two sets scoring 6-1, 6-3.
Senior Shirley Mendoza also split her matches scoring 6-0, 6-3 in herfirst match against Rachel Drummond from Montana State, and losing inher second match against Vida Senci of Idaho 6-2, 6-4.
The only freshman on the Cowgirl team, Paulina del Monte only had onematch the first day. She was defeated by Jemina Attard of Boise State,6-0, 6-3.
Angela Dossetor and Amanda Roberts both added one win and one loss totheir record as well. Angela was defeated in her first match versusGloriana Serrano of Idaho 6-0, 6-2, and won her second match againstMontana?s Kate Kohlschreiber 6-1, 6-2, while Amanda Roberts won herfirst match against Staci Rust from Montana State, 6-1, 6-2, but losther second match to Idaho?s Cameron Erickson 6-2, 6-2.
Sophomore Lindsay McPhail only played one match today and fought hardfor a victory, but lost to Montana State?s Nellie Crowley in three sets,1-6, 6-1, 6-2.
In doubles, Kay and Dossetor, Mendoza and del Monte, and A. Roberts andMcPhail all found victories scoring 8-3, 8-1, and 8-1 respectively.
Second Day at the Washington State Invitational:The day started with Melanie Roberts defeating Pooja Deshmukh from Idaho6-4, 6-4. Next, Sarah Kay and Sofia Espinosa were defeated byWashington State?s Patrycja 7-5, 6-0 and Portland?s Jusapovic 6-4, 6-4respectively.
Senior, Shirley Mendoza, in the consolation finals of number foursingles, defeated Portland?s Jusapovic 6-4, 6-4 for a win, whilefreshman, Paulina del Monte also found victory in the number fiveconsolation finals against Idaho?s Nicoll, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3. In the number six position, Angela Dossetor, lost in the consolationfinals to Cheung from Boise State 6-3, 6-4, while in the seventhposition, Amanda Roberts played a tough match and defeated her opponent,Lyman from Montana, in the consolation finals scoring 1-6, 7-5, 7-6.Lindsay McPhail, also contending in the number seven consolation finals,lost to her opponent, Barger from Montana, 6-3, 6-1.
In doubles play, the Cowgirls won two matches, however lost five forthe day. The first match resulted in a loss for Roberts and Espinosa toSteenkamp and Jensen from Montana 8-4, while in the second and thirdmatch for the Cowgirls, Kay and Dossetor were defeated by a WashingtonState team 8-1 and then lost to a Boise State team 8-4. One of the two victories for the Cowgirls came next when Mendoza anddel Monte got a win against Idaho?s Erickson and Nicoll 9-7, howeverthey couldn?t find a victory against Montana State?s Voelker and Risteenscoring 8-5. The Cowgirl team of Roberts and McPhail split their doubles matcheswith one win against Erickson and Nicoll, and one loss against Voelkerand Risteen scoring 8-5.
