The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball team improved their early season record to 2-0 with another five game win (25-30, 30-26, 30-28, 39-41, 15-4) against the Weber State Wildcats (0-1 overall) on Saturday night in Ogden, Utah.
"It was nice to come away with two tough five game wins over the weekend," said UW head coach Pat Stangle. "Weber State was a tough team to battle, but we came away with a win. Once again our seniors Angie Hellbaum and Rachel Smith really showed their stuff tonight. We got our middles going tonight, and I was pleased the play of our freshmen Jenna Arneson and Lauren Whitney."
Seniors Angie Hellbaum and Rachel Smith led the way once again in the Cowgirls' victory. Each recorded 23 kills, while Smith finished with a career high 24 digs, two service aces and two block assists. Hellbaum added 11 digs and three block assists for her night, while hitting .286. Middle blocker Lauren Scott recorded a season high 13 kills and five block assists while freshman Lauren Whitney finished with a career high 12 kills on the night. Samantha Eley recorded 19 digs while setter Tasha Weishahn had a career high 74 assists along with 15 digs. Wyoming hit .232 (84-36-207) for the night and recorded 80 digs and eight total blocks.
Weber State was led by Chelsea Bair who finished with a team high 19 kills and a .372 (19-3-43) hitting percentage. She was followed by Brittney Bisaillon and Micah Lines with 12 kills and Jenna Leggat with 11. The Wildcats hit .213 (65-25-188) and finished with 20 total team blocks.
Wyoming will continue pre-season play on Friday, August 31 against Portland and Toledo at the UC Irvine Tournament.
