Seattle, Wash. -
The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball team (1-1 overall) earned their first win of the 2005 season with a three-game victory (30-24, 30-14, 30-18) over the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs, on Saturday night to close out the University of Washington Husky Challenge.
"We played a better and much cleaner match tonight," said head coach Pat Stangle. "We cut down on our errors and executed our game plan a lot better. Everyone did a nice job in the match and I was really pleased with the way things went. Now, we will come home and start preparing for a very big weekend coming up as we are excited about hosting the UniWyo Cowgirl Classic."
It was close in the early going of game one as neither team could really get any momentum going. Up 7-4, the Cowgirls would finally gain an advantage and go up six, 14-8, by scoring seven of the next 11 points. Gardner-Webb would pull within two, but another Wyoming scoring run put them back up by five, 20-15. The Runnin' Bulldogs weren't going to give up that easily as they continued to chip away at the UW lead to make the score 21-19. The Cowgirls kept their composure and closed the game out 30-24.
Things once again started out very tight in game two as each team traded points back and forth. Finally with the score 7-6 in favor of the Cowgirls, UW would go on a 6-1 run to open things up 13-7. It didn't get much better for Gardner-Webb as they could only manage to score seven points the remainder of the game. Wyoming could take the game 30-14 and a 2-0 lead in the match.
Garnder-Webb came out fired up as they quickly jumped out to an early 8-4 lead to begin game three. The Cowgirls rallied back with an 8-2 run to go up by two, 12-10. They would increase their advantage to six points, 20-14, as the Runnin' Bulldogs started to struggle scoring points. Wyoming wrapped up the game and the match as they closed it out on a 10-4 run to win the game, 30-18, and the match 3-0.
Sophomore outside hitter Rachel Smith recorded her second double-double in a row as she finished with 12 kills and ten digs while hitting .312 (12-2-32) for the match. She was followed by Andrea Seele who had 11 kills and hit a season high .312 (11-3-17). As a team, the Cowgirls finished the night hitting .350 (.45-10-100) compared to .018 (31-29-114) by Gardner-Webb.
The Cowgirls will now head home as they will host the UniWyo Cowgirl Classic, Thursday, Sept. 1 through, Saturday, Sept. 3. They will open up against the Boise State Broncos, on Thursday night, and then close things out on Saturday night against the Northern Colorado Bears. Both matches are set for 7:00 p.m. in the UniWyo Sports Complex.
