The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball Team (3-1 overall) concluded the weekend by winning the 2011 UniWyo Wyoming Invite with two victories on Saturday. They swept the South Dakota Coyotes (25-23, 25-20, 28-26) and the DePaul Blue Demons (25-12, 25-17, 27-25) to earn the title. Jodi Purdy was named the MVP of the tournament, while Erin Kirby earned All-Tournament Team honors.

"Our team came out focused and ready to play today," said head coach Carrie Yerty. "Every match in this tournament we won the first two sets, which is a huge momentum booster for us. We didn't have Becky Stewart, but Emily Rochelle was amazing as a first time libero. Jodi Purdy did a great job as a blocker, as was Erin Kirby in her first action as a Cowgirl. Overall, I was pleased with our finish and wish we could have another shot at Oregon State, but in the end it worked out in our favor. I was proud of the team, the energy and their efforts."

South Dakota took the early 6-3 lead to being the match. The Cowgirls evened things up at six all, but the Coyotes scored the next three points to regain a 9-6 advantage. Six straight points by Wyoming gave them their first lead 12-9. USD responded with a 7-4 run to tie the score at 16 . The teams went point for point until the Cowgirls scored the final three of four points to take a set 25-23.

In the second set, the Coyotes gained the 4-1 lead. Wyoming responded with six straight points to make it 7-4. USD scored the next 7 of 10 points to go ahead, 11-10. The Cowgirls came back with a 10-4 run to give them a five point advantage, 20-15. Both teams played even the remainder of the way as Wyoming held on to win the set 25-20 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

The momentum shifted the way of the Coyotes in the third set. After a 5-4 lead by the Cowgirls, USD went on a 10-4 run to give them a 14-8 lead, which they would extend to seven, 17-10. Wyoming battled back with seven straight to tie it up at 17 all. South Dakota scored the next three of four points to regain the 21-18 lead. The Cowgirls would score the next four of five points to make it 22 all and eventually gained match point 24-23. The Coyotes scored the next two points to try and win the set, but the Cowgirls held on and took the set 28-26 and the match 3-0.

Wyoming was led by redshirt freshman Erin Kirby who eclipsed her career high with 11 kills and a .688 (11-0-16) hitting percentage. Camille Coffman and Jodi Purdy each added eight kills, while Reese Plante had a match high seven block assists. The Cowgirls hit .337 (45-12-98) for the match and out blocked USD 10-2.

After DePaul took the early 3-1 lead to begin the set, the Cowgirls answered with a 7-0 run to go up by five, 8-3. They extended the lead to double-figures, 18-9, with a 10-6 run. It wouldn't be close as Wyoming held the Blue Demons to just three points the remainder of the set to take the first one, 25-12.

The momentum carried over in to the second set as Wyoming gained a seven point advantage, 10-3. After the Blue Demons ended the run, the Cowgirls built their lead back to seven, 16-9. DePaul would chip away though and go on a 6-1 run to pull within two, 17-15. That would be as close as UW would win the second set 25-17 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

DePaul came out and went up 3-0 to start the third set. Wyoming battled back to go ahead by one, 4-3. The two teams traded the next couple of points until a 6-1 run put the Cowgirls up five, 11-6. They continued to hold that lead until the Blue Demons made it a two point contest 14-12. Wyoming scored the next six of nine to extend the lead back to five, 20-15. DePaul was determined to not go away as they went on an 8-3 run of their own to tie it up at 23 all. The Cowgirls scored the next point to gain set point, but two straight points by DePaul gave them set point, 25-24. Wyoming would remain composed and scored two straight to win the set, 27-25, and the match 3-0.

The Cowgirls were led by junior Jodi Purdy who recorded seven kills and ten digs, while adding four total blocks. Camille Coffman added six kills, while Erin Kirby and Calli Miller each recorded five. Emily Rochelle tied a team high with ten assists. Wyoming will head out on the road for the first time next week. They will be at the Sheraton Inn Drake Invitational, Friday, Sept. 2-3. The Cowgirls will face Milwaukee, Drake and IPFW over the weekend.
