Waco, Texas - The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball Team (2-1 overall) wrapped up the 2003 Baylor Classic with an exciting five game match against the Baylor Bears (2-1 overall), on Saturday afternoon, in Waco, Texas. The Cowgirls beat the Bears, 3-2, by scores of 30-20, 22-30, 30-24, 19-30 and 15-12.

It was an even first couple of points to start the match until Baylor ran off three straight to take the early 7-4 lead, but the Cowgirls answered back with four points of their own to gain their first lead of the game. With the score tied up at nine all, UW went on a run scoring the next seven of ten points to gain their largest advantage of the game, 16-12. It was a lead they maintained despite a great effort from the Bears as they pulled to within one point 18-17. Wyoming looked like they flipped on the momentum switch as they outscored Baylor 12-3, which included a stretch of eight in a row, to take the first game 30-20. Freshman Andrea Seele led the way for the Cowgirls with six kills and a .750 hitting percentage, while the Cowgirls hit .344 (16-5-32) fro the game.

Baylor rebounded with a good start in the second game by taking a 10-3 lead. Despite getting down early the Cowgirls continued to battle pulling to within four, 14-10, but another 8-4 run from the Bears gave them another large lead, 22-14. Unfortunately, Wyoming couldn't overcome the deficit as Baylor would evened up the match 1-1 by taking the game 30-22. The Cowgirls struggled hitting only .178 (18-10-45) compared to the .394 (14-1-33) for the Bears.

The third game saw the Cowgirls open up by scoring the first three points and then the next five coming from Baylor to give them the early lead, 5-3. It then looked like game one as Wyoming went on an 8-1 run to open up a five point margin. They would maintain the lead and every time Baylor seemed to make a move the Cowgirls would answer including an 8-3 scoring run to put them up 22-14. Despite being out scored 10-8 in the final points, UW still took the game 30-24 and a 2-1 lead in the match.

Each team traded points for the first part of game four as neither team maintained a lead larger than one or two points. Down 12-10, Baylor would go on a 11-2 run, including four unanswered, to open up a 21-14 lead. The Cowgirls would only be able to pull within five but the margin was to much to overcome as the Bears forced a fifth game after a 30-19 win in the fourth.

It was fast and furious to begin the fifth and final game as the Cowgirls were the first team to gain a significant lead with a small run, 8-4. The Bears answered back with a run of their own to pull within one, but the Cowgirls kept their composure and scored the next six of eight points to have match point 14-10. Baylor hung tough holding off two match points before falling 15-12 in the final game.

"This was a tremendous test for our team playing a Big 12 school and coming out on top," said head coach Jim Barnes. 'We demonstrated a complete team effort and I believe we truly want to win this season. There were several individuals that stepped up to win this match and that will be the key to our success this season."

Four Cowgirls finished in double-figures, including Michele Rauter. She finished the night with a season high 20 kills and 11 digs for her third double-double of the season. She also earned All-Tournament Team honors with those numbers.

Freshman Andrea Seele recorded a career high 12 kills, while Sara Maytorena and Leah Powers chipped in 13 and ten respectively. As a team, Wyoming hit .232 (67-29-164) for the night.
