The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball Team (3-2 overall) opened up the Sheraton West Inn Drake Invitational with a disappointing four set loss (21-25, 23-25, 25-18, 21-25) against the UW-Milwaukee Panthers (3-1 overall) on Friday afternoon.

The Cowgirls were led by Jodi Purdy with 15 kills and 15 digs. She was followed by Calli Miller with 10 kills and 12 digs. Wyoming hit .262 (54-17-141) for the match. The Panthers were led by Elizabeth Egerer with 23 kills and a .275 (23-9-51) hitting percentage.

Milwaukee jumped out early in the match to take a 6-4 lead. The Cowgirls would pull to within two, 7-5, but the Panthers scored five of the next eight points to regain a four point advantage, 12-8. After a Wyoming timeout, the Cowgirls would go on a small run to make it a two point set, 13-11. Five unanswered by UWM extended the lead back to seven, 18-11. The Cowgirls tried to chip away at the lead and scored seven of ten to close the gap to three, 21-18. Unfortunately, that would be as close as they would get as the Panthers took set one, 25-21.

In the second set, the momentum stayed on the side of Milwaukee as they earned an 8-3 advantage. Wyoming tried to chip into that lead by scoring five of the next eight to bring them to within three, 11-8. Both teams traded scores over the next several points as the Panthers continued to maintain their lead 16-12. The Cowgirls would battle back and eventually tied it up at 23 all. Milwaukee would score the last two points and win the set 25-23 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Both teams went back and forth in the early going of the third set until the Cowgirls gained a small 8-5 advantage. Over the next several points they continued to hold onto a three to four point lead. With the score 12-10 in favor of UW, they went on a 9-4 run to extend that margin to seven, 21-14. Their lead was never in jeopardy as they took the third set 25-18.

The fourth set started out similar to the previous one as the teams traded scores until a two point run gave the Panthers a 9-7 advantage. Wyoming would tie it up at nine and eventually took the lead 10-9, but four of five by UW Milwaukee gave them a 13-11 advantage. It would stay fairly even for the next several points with neither team taking a fairly large lead. With the score tied at 21 all, Milwaukee scored the final four points to win the set, 25-21, and the match 3-1.

Wyoming will close out the weekend tomorrow with matches against Drake at 11:00 a.m. and IPFW at 4:30 p.m.
