Laramie, Wyoming - The Cowgirl Volleyball Team (3-1 overall) opened up the 2003 home season with a 3-0 victory over the Sam Houston State Bearkats (2-3 overall) on Friday night.
Wyoming opened up with the early 5-1 lead in game one, but the Bearkats stormed back with an 8-3 run which included five straight points. With it all tied up at 12, Wyoming answered with a run of their own, 11-4, to open up a seven point margin, 23-16. SHSU continued to battle but the deficit was too much to overcome as the Cowgirls took the first game, 30-21.
After taking a very early 2-1 lead in the second game, the Cowgirls really struggled to score as a determined Bearkat team seemed to be everywhere on the court. A 9-3 run from Sam Houston State helped them gain a 14-8 advantage. They held on to that lead until the Cowgirls regained it, 19-18. After that the two teams continued to battle back and forth with neither team holding a lead larger than one or two points. Finally with the score at 28 all, the Cowgirls would pull out the 30-28 win to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Wyoming took control of the match as they took the lead from the beginning to the end of game three. They started out by opening up with an 11-3 lead and continued to maintain it. The Bearkats pulled to within three, 18-15, but that's as close as they would get. The Cowgirls came out on top 30-23 to earn a 3-0 victory.
"It was a good win and our first home victory," said head coach Jim Barnes. "I didn't feel we played as well as we could have. The ladies pressed a little too hard and tried to show how well they are playing. Sometimes you try to hard and that was the case tonight. We weren't as focused as we were on the road and we'll just have to learn from this."
The Bearkats were led by Carrie Sartain, who finished with a team leading 11 kills and five digs. As a team, they finished with a .101 (36-27-89) hitting percentage.
Two players finished in double-figures for the Cowgirls, including Michele Rauter. She finished with a team leading 14 kills and a .414 hitting percentage. Junior Sara Maytorena tallied 12 kills and three block assists. Wyoming finished the night hitting .276 (46-17-105)
The Cowgirls will wrap up the tournament with two matches. They'll face San Jose State at 1:00 p.m. and Weber State at 7:30 p.m. Both matches will be in the MPG.
"Both teams we'll face tomorrow are very scrappy," added Barnes. "We'll have play better defensively, relax and play our game."
