FT. COLLINS, Colo. - In their opening conference matchof the season, the Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball Team (4-2 overall, 0-1 inthe MWC) fell to the 18th-ranked Colorado State Rams (4-1 overall, 1-0in the MWC) in three games (15-30, 23-30, 21-30) on Saturday night inFt. Collins.
Colorado State opened up the match on a tear scoring the first eightpoints to start the game. It wouldn't be until they had an 8-0 leadbefore the Cowgirls scored their first point and the next four to closethe margin to 8-4. The Rams would answer right back with a 7-0 run oftheir own. Up by a score of 15-5, CSU closed out the game by going on a15-10 run to take the first game 30-15.
CSU jumped out to the early lead once again in game two, but theCowgirls fought back to close the margin to 9-7. Wyoming stayed closethroughout until the Rams opened up a seven point lead, 20-13. Theywould maintain that lead and outscore the Cowgirls to win the game 30-23and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Game three saw each team battle point for point with no one reallygaining an advantage. With the score tied up at eight, CSU would go on a12-5 run to open up a seven point lead. A four point scoring run closedthat margin to four, but it wasn't enough as Colorado State would winthe game 30-21 and take the match 3-0.
"When you set a tone to begin the match, especially against a goodteam, not coming out aggressive and scared you give the other team moreconfidence," said head coach Jim Barnes. "We battled the second andthird games and had our chances, but it seemed too much to overcome fromthe first game. It's still a big learning process for the girls, as faras learning how to come out tough and ready play. We have a long seasonahead of us, so we'll see what happens farther down the road."
Wyoming was led by sophomore Sara Maytorena, who finished with tenkills, five digs and a .400 (10-2-20) hitting percentage. The Cowgirlsstruggled hitting only .087 (35-26-103), and recording 20 assists andfour blocks.
The Cowgirls will continue their road trip, on Monday in Pocatello,Idaho, with a single match against the Idaho State Bengals. They willalso be on the road next week at the Auburn Tournament with matchesagainst Middle Tennessee State, UNC Greensboro and Auburn.
