Auburn, Ala. -- In their second match of the day, theWyoming Cowgirl Volleyball Team (7-2 overall, 0-1 MWC) recorded a threegame sweep (30-20, 30-18, 30-23) over the UNC Greensboro Spartans (2-8overall, 0-1 Southern), on Saturday night in Auburn, Alabama.
Both teams started out the beginning of the match a little tight andtentative, but UNCG would be the first to take a lead 11-8. The Cowgirlsrallied right back with a 6-0 run to go up 14-11, and continued that runby opening their lead up to eight points, 22-14. They would maintainthat advantage and score the final five points unanswered to take thegame 30-20. They would hit .314 (17-6-35) compared to .026 (9-8-39) forthe Spartans.
UW opened it up in the second game by scoring six unanswered for a 9-3lead. The Spartans would close that margin to three points, but theCowgirls opened up their lead to eight points, 17-9. With a commandinglead UW would outscore UNCG 13-8 to win the game 30-18 and take a 2-0lead in the match.
With some of the subs off the bench for the Cowgirls, they wouldmaintain that same intensity from the previous two games. Afterexchanging points early, it was Wyoming that would take the lead 11-10and maintained it. Despite several efforts by the Spartans to get backin the match, it wouldn't be enough. The Cowgirls would take the game30-23 and the match 3-0.
This is the first time since the 1994 season that a Cowgirl team hasstarted the season 7-2 through nine games. That team went 8-2 to startthe year.
"I liked how we started out offensively in the first game, and how weexecuted on some plays we were working on," said head coach Jim Barnes."We still need to work on individuals performing on a more consistentlevel, and that's what we'll work on in our match tomorrow."
Junior Michele Rauter recorded a team high 13 kills, while hiting .267(13-5-30) for the evening, while Sara Maytorena had a team leading 13digs. Newcomer Hana Perlee had a career high nine kills, two blockassists and a .333 (9-3-18) hitting percentage. As a team, they hit .227(44-19-110) compared to the -.041 (28-33-121) for UNC Greensboro.
The Cowgirls will wrap up the weekend at the War Eagle Invitational,Sunday at 2:00 p.m., against the host school Auburn Tigers.
