Wyoming Volleyball Falls In Four Against Indiana

The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball Team (6-2 overall) opened up the Hoosier Classic with a four set loss (17-25, 25-23, 21-25, 22-25) to the Indiana Hoosiers (6-1 overall) on Friday night in Bloomington.

The Cowgirls were led by Reese Plante with ten kills and three blocks, while hitting .667 (10-0-15). She was followed by Kayla Slofkiss with seven kills and Becky Stewart added 15 digs. Wyoming hit .220 (35-13-100) for the match and had 11 total blocks.

Indiana was led by Amelia Anderson with a match high 21 kills and a .457 (21-5-35) hitting percentage. Awele Nwaeze added 14 kills and hit .500 (14-3-22). They hit .346 (65-21-127) and recorded seven total blocks.

The two teams traded points early in the first set until three straight kills by the Cowgirls gave them a 5-2 lead. Indiana scored the next four of five points to even it up at six all. Wyoming answered with a small run to go back ahead by three, 10-7. The Hoosiers tied the score at 10, but the Cowgirls responded with four straight points giving them a 14-10 advantage. After a timeout by Indiana, they stormed out and scored seven unanswered to go up 17-14. A service error by Jordan Haverly finally ended the scoring run by IU, unfortunately it didn't get better for the Cowgirls offensively. They would get outscored 7-2 the remainder of the set to fall 25-17. UW hit .087 (8-6-23) for the set and several players had two kills each.

Wyoming regained the momentum to begin the second set as they built a three-point lead, 8-5. The Hoosiers went on a 4-1 run to even up the score at nine. The Cowgirls scored three straight points to make it 12-9, which was tied up by Indiana. Wyoming responded by scoring eight of 11 to give them a five point lead 20-15. IU would battle back and close the gap to one, 22-21. A service error and block assist from Erin Kirby and Kayla Henderson gave UW set point 24-21. The Hoosiers held off two set points until a kill from Henderson helped the Cowgirls take the second set 25-23.

The third set started off like the previous two as the Cowgirls went up 8-5. A 5-2 scoring run by the Hoosiers would tie the score up ten all, but Wyoming scored the next two of three giving them a one point advantage 12-11. Indiana responded with a 6-2 run to put them up 17-14. A service error by Morgan Leach ended the scoring drought for UW and they made a small push to close the gap to one, 19-18. That would be as close as the score would get as the Hoosiers took the set, 25-21, and a 2-1 lead in the match.

Indiana jumped out to a 5-2 lead in set four. The Cowgirls scored five of the next seven points to tie it up at seven. The two teams traded points until the Hoosiers went on a run to give them a 16-12 advantage. A block by Erin Kirby and Mikaela Ryshytylo stopped the run and Wyoming would battle back to within one, 21-20. Unfortunately, the Cowgirls couldn't overcome the deficit as Indiana won the set 25-22 and the match 3-1.

Wyoming will continue play at the Hoosier Classic tomorrow. They will face the UAB Blazers beginning at 8:00 a.m. MT before wrapping up the day against the Tennessee State Tigers at 3:00 p.m. MT.
