Cowgirls Win Second Tournament Of The Season

AUBURN, Ala. -- The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball Team(8-2 overall, 0-1 MWC) wrapped up the War Eagle Invitational, on Sundayafternoon, with a three game win over the Auburn Tigers (1-8 overall)by the scores of 30-18, 30-19, 30-24.

The Cowgirls jumped out to the early game one lead 10-3, including fourunanswered points. Up 16-11, they would go on an 8-0 run to up theirlead to 13 points, 24-11. Auburn would only score seven points theremainder of the game as Wyoming took it 30-18.

The Tigers opened game by scoring the first three points and maintaineda two or three point advantage for the majority. The Cowgirls tied thescore at 16-16 and took a one point lead. With the scored tied at 17-17,Wyoming would score the next 13 of 15 points to win game two 30-19 andtake a 2-0 lead in the match.

Auburn hung tough in the third game by taking a 9-4 lead, but theCowgirls came back by outscoring the Tigers 13-4 to not only tie thegame but take a 17-13 advantage. They held a two or three point leaduntil finally pulling away with a 30-24 score and a 3-0 win.

"This was a very good tournament for us, because we were able to playseveral players off the bench and still able to control the match." saidhead coach Jim Barnes. "Overall, we played well, which will help usevaluate our best starting rotation."

Sophomore Sara Maytorena led the way with 13 kills, nine digs and a.706 (13-1-17) hitting percentage, which earned her the MVP tournamentaward. Setter Amy Doman and outside hiter Michele Rauter also earnedAll-Tournament Team honors. As a team the Cowgirls hit .330 (48-18-91)for the match compared to .093 (30-21-97) by Auburn. The Cowgirls arenow off to their best start since the 1994 season with an 8-2 start.

The Cowgirls' will once again be on the road this upcoming weekend inCorpus Christi, Texas participating in the Islander Classic. They willface Texas Southern, on Friday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. MT, and then TexasA&M-Corpus Christi, on Friday night, at 6:00 p.m. MT. They will closeout the weekend with a match up against the Texas Pan American LadyBroncs, on Saturday afternoon, at 2:00 p.m. MT.
