Bozeman, Montana - In the opening match of the Wingate Invitational, the Cowgirl Volleyball team (8-4 overall) fell in three, 19-30, 24-30, 25-30, against the host school Montana State Bobcats (8-2 overall) on Friday night in Bozeman.
Montana State would take the early lead in the opening game of the match, 8-5. That lead grew to a six point margin after a 5-2 run from the Bobcats, 13-7. The Cowgirls tried to climb their way back into it by scoring the next four of six points to pull within three, but MSU responded with four straight points to open up another seven point lead, 19-12. Despite a good effort from UW, it was all Bobcats from that point as they out scored the Cowgirls, 11-7, to take game one, 30-19.
The Cowgirls began game two by scoring the first couple of points, but MSU scored four straight to take the lead 4-3. Wyoming quickly regained a two point advantage, but once again a Bobcat run helped them regain the lead 8-6. With it all tied up at nine, Montana State scored the next seven of 11 points to open up a five point margin, 16-11. Wyoming seemed to get a little momentum going with a 6-2 run to pull within one, but the Bobcats had an answer for everything. Up 18-17, MSU really pulled away in the game with another 8-2 run, which included four straight, to go up 26-19. UW only managed to score five more points as the Bobcats took a 2-0 lead in the match by winning game two, 30-24.
The start of game three almost mirrored how game two began with the Cowgirls scoring early and Montana State battling back to take the lead. In fact, they would score six straight points to gain a five point advantage 10-5. MSU maintained a significant lead throughout the game as the Wyoming continued to struggle on the offensive side of things. A 10-3 run from the Cowgirls pulled them to within one point, which was as close as they'd been since the start of the game, but MSU continued to keep them just out of reach. It would be too much of an uphill climb for the Cowgirls as they fell 30-25 in the third game.
The Cowgirls struggled offensively hitting only .054 (40-33-130) and recording four total blocks for the match. Michele Rauter and Sara Maytorena finished with double-figures in kills with 11 and ten respectively. Rauter also recorded 12 digs.
Montana State hit .276 (44-15-105) on the night and recorded 11 total team blocks. They were led by Meggie Malyurek, who recorded 12 kills and 13 digs.
Wyoming will continue tournament play tomorrow with a match against the Marquette Golden Eagles, at 10:00 a.m., and then wrap up the tournament against the Gonzaga Bulldogs at 5:00 p.m.
