CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - In their second match of theIslander Classic, the Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball Team (10-2 overall, 0-1MWC) defeated the Texas Southern Lady Tigers (1-11, 0-1 SWAC) in threegames (30-11, 30-19, 30-19), on Saturday morning.
Wyoming opened up the game scoring the first eight of nine points totake an 8-1 lead. They maintained a huge advantage and outscore the LadyTigers 18-10 the remainder of the way to take the game 30-11. TheCowgirls hit .478 (14-3-23) compared to -.056 (5-6-18) by TexasSouthern.
The Cowgirls continued to dominate in the second game with an openinglead of 15-8. The Lady Tigers were never within reach during the game,despite a small five point run during the game. UW would take the game30-19 and a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.
Texas Southern hung tough in game three by closing the gap to only twopoints, 7-5, unfortunately it was as close as they would get. TheCowgirls ran away with it by outscoring the Lady Tigers 23-14 to winthe game 30-19 and the match in three games.
Leah Powers and Sara Maytorena led the team in kills with nine, whileMaytorena also finished with a .636 (9-2-11) hitting percentage. KatyBrown had a season high 22 assists in the match. As a team the Cowgirlshit .366 (49-15-93) compared to .058 (20-16-69) by Texas Southern, alongwith recording a team high 15 service aces.
The Cowgirls will finish up the weekend with a match against the UT PanAmerican Lady Broncs later in the afternoon.
