Wyoming Starts MWC Play With Loss at UNLV

The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball Team (8-6 overall, 0-1 in the MWC) opened up the 2009 MWC season with a tough 3-2 loss (25-14, 25-19, 22-25, 22-25, 8-15) against the UNLV Rebels (2-7 overall, 1-1 in the MWC), on Tuesday night, in Las Vegas.

Wyoming had three players in double-figures on the night led by freshman Jodi Purdy. She recorded a double-double with 20 kills and 11 digs. She was followed by Dani Bedore with a season high 18 kills and 11 digs, while JennaRae Jester added 13 kills and five block assists. The Cowgirls hit .303 (65-15-165) for the night and out blocked the Rebels 10.5-7.

The Rebels were led by Cursty Jackson with 18 kills and four block assists. Sara Nehf added 15 kills and 11 digs, while Kelsey Keeler added 12 kills. UNLV hit .283 (71-26-159) for the match.

The Cowgirls started off the first set on a high note as they opened up with an 8-2 lead. UNLV battled their way back into it with a small run to pull within four, 10-6. Wyoming responded with an 8-4 scoring run to increase the lead back to seven, 18-11. They would continue their strong play as they scored the final seven of ten points to take the set 25-14.

It was back and forth scoring to begin the second set as neither team gained a significant advantage. With the score tied up at eight all, the Rebels went on a 4-1 run to take a 12-9 lead, but the Cowgirls scored four of five to even it up at 13 all. The momentum would shift Wyoming's way as they went on a 6-1 run to take a five point lead, 19-14, which they would extend to eight, 23-15. UNLV closed the gap to five, 23-18, but the Cowgirls would hold on to win the set 25-19 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Cowgirls would take a small 5-3 lead to begin the third set, unfortunately the Rebels answered with an 8-1 run to go up five, 11-6. Wyoming battled back with a 9-2 run to regain the lead, 15-13. UNLV would score the next five of eight to things up at 18 all, and would eventually take the lead 23-20. UW would pull to within one, 23-22, but fell in the set 25-22.

In the fourth set, UNLV went up by the score of 7-4. Wyoming would make a small run to close the gap to one, 8-7, but the Rebels scored the next five of seven to regain a four point lead, 13-9. This time, the Cowgirls would go on a 6-2 run to even up the score at 15 all. It was short lived as UNLV regained the lead 20-18, and went on to take the set 25-22 to force a fifth set.

The Cowgirls fell behind once again to begin the fifth set, 8-5. Unfortunately, they were never able to pull any closer than two as they fell 15-8 and 3-2 in the match.

Wyoming will return to Laramie for their first two home MWC matches. They will host the TCU Horned Frogs, on Thursday, Sept. 24, and the New Mexico Lobos, on Saturday, Sept. 26. Both matches are set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
