SAN DIEGO, Calif. -
The Wyoming Cowgirl volleyball team (5-6 overall, 0-2 in the MWC) closed out the weekend with a tough three game loss (30-16, 30-18, 30-19) to the San Diego State Aztecs (9-5, 1-1 in the MWC) on Saturday afternoon in San Diego.
Sophomore Rachel Smith led the way with eight kills followed by Angie Hellbaum with six and three players with four. Libero Carissa Lee had a team high ten kills. The Cowgirls hit .095 (29-20-95) for the match compared to .420 (51-9-100) by San Diego State.
"We got Tasha (Weishahn) back today which was huge," said head coach Pat Stangle. "She'll have to play her way back in to the line-up but hopefully that will help with our continuity. Angie Hellbaum had a nice match today, but we need everyone to start playing on a consistent basis."
San Diego State came out fired up as they took an early 6-1 advantage. They would increase their lead to double-digits, 16-4, after a 10-3 run, while the Cowgirls really struggled to get in to the flow of the game. Things were never very close in the game as SDSU maintained the lead throughout to take the first game, 30-16.
After the Aztecs scored the first two points of the second game, the Cowgirls scored the next five straight to take their first lead of the match 5-2. They would continue to build upon that with a 4-1 run to go up by six, 9-3, but San Diego State chipped away at the lead with seven unanswered points to regain a one-point lead, 10-9. Wyoming would even things up at 15 all, but SDSU quickly went back up by four 19-15. The Cowgirls tried to make one more comeback and pulled to within one, 19-18, unfortunately they would be out scored 12-0 the remainder of the way as SDSU took the game, 30-18, and a 2-0 lead in the match.
It was SDSU early in game three as they went up by a score of 6-2. A 5-2 run from the Cowgirls pulled them to within one, but five straight from the Aztecs gave them a five point advantage, 13-8. Wyoming tried to chip away as the Aztec lead by scoring the next six of ten to bring the score to 17-14 unfortunately the San Diego State had an answer for everything. They would score the final 13 of 18 points to win the game, 30- and the match, 3-0.
The Cowgirls will continue conference play on the road next week as they travel to Ft. Collins to face the Colorado State Rams. The match is Friday, Sept. 30 at Moby Arena beginning at 7:00 p.m.
