SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - The Wyoming CowgirlVolleyball team (10-5 overall, 0-1 in the MWC) opened up the 2003Mountain West Conference season with a three game loss, 24-30, 32-34,25-30, against the Utah Utes (7-5 overall, 0-1 in the MWC) on Fridaynight.
The Cowgirls opened the match with an early 3-1 lead. Utahanswered with four straight to take their first lead of the game, 4-3,and then would record the next four of six points to gain a three pointmargin, 8-5. Wyoming responded with a 6-3 run to even up the score at 11all, but the Utes got two quick points to regain the lead. With it alltied up at 17, the momentum seemed to shift the Utes way as they scoredthe next seven of nine to take a 24-19 advantage. The Cowgirls continuedto battle and pulled to within three, unfortunately that was as close asthey would get. Utah would take game one, 30-24.
That momentum continued into game two for the Utes as they openedwith an 8-3 lead. The Cowgirls battled back with a 7-5 run which pulledthem to within three 13-10, but Utah seemed to have an answer for everypoint. Down 16-12, Wyoming scored the next four of five to even thingsup at 17 all unfortunately the Utes responded with four unanswered to goback up 21-17. Never willing to give up, Wyoming went on a 9-3 run, notonly to tie it up, but take their first lead of the game, 26-24. AfterUtah quickly tied it up, the fight was on as each team held off threegame points each before the Utes came out on top, 34-32.
It was pretty even to begin game three with the two teams tradingpoints back and forth. The Cowgirls were the first to take a significantlead, 10-8, but the Utes answered with four straight to take their firstlead of the game, 12-10. After Wyoming evened it up, Utah went on a 5-1run to open up a four point advantage, 17-13. UW continued to battlepulling within two, 17-15, but the Utes pulled away again by scoring thenext five points. Unfortunately in the end the deficit was too much toovercome, despite holding off three game points, as Utah won the game,30- 25 and the match 3-0.
Junior Jill Roslund led the Cowgirls with 11 kills, one block soloand five block assists. She also hit .364 (11-3-22) for the night.Senior Leah Powers also finished with a .636 (8-1-11) hitting percentageto lead the team. Wyoming hit .266 (45-16-109), but struggled with 13service errors.
Utah was led by Kim Turner, who finished with a game high 17 killsand ten digs. The Utes hit. 301 (59-22-123) for the match, whilerecording nine total blocks.
Wyoming will continue conference play on the road tomorrownight with a match-up against the BYU Cougars, in Provo, at 7:00 p.m.
