Provo, Utah (Sept. 27, 2003) -- The Cowgirl Volleyball team (10-6 overall, 0-2 in the MWC) wrapped up their first weekend of conference play with a three game loss, 23-30, 25-30, 25-30, against the BYU Cougars (10-4 overall, 1-1 in the MWC), on Saturday night, in Provo.
BYU took the first lead of the game by the score of 7-3. The Cowgirls scored the next couple of points to pull within two, but the Cougars rallied with a 10-8 run to open up an 18-11 lead. They maintained a significant lead over the next several points and for the remainder of the game. Wyoming continued to battle unfortunately the deficit was too much to overcome as they fell in game one, 30-23.
The Cougars started out strong to begin the second game by scoring the first 10 of 13 points, which included five unanswered, as the Cowgirls offensive woes continued. But Wyoming hung tough and rallied with a 9-6 run to pull within four points, 16-12, which was the closest they'd been since the start of the game. The BYU lead stayed around four or five points until another run from the Cowgirls brought them to within two points, 19-17. Unfortunately four straight from the Cougars reopened a six point margin, 23-17, but UW was unwilling to give up that easy by scoring the next eight of 12 to once again close within two points. In the end, BYU would wrap up the game, 30-25, and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
It was all Wyoming to start the third game as they jumped out to a 6-2 lead, but the Cougars responded with a 9-2 run to take their first lead of the game, 11-8. BYU maintained that advantage, but a rally from the Cowgirls to even up the score at 16. The two teams really battled it out from that point as each traded points until the Cougars took a two point lead, 22-20. After the Cowgirls pulled to within one, BYU pulled away with another run to win the game 30-25 and the match, 3-0.
Wyoming will host their first home conference matches of the season next weekend. They welcome the San Diego State Aztecs on Friday night and the UNLV Lady Rebels on Saturday night. Both matches will be played in the MPG and begin at 7:00 p.m.
