The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball Team (9-8 overall, 0-3 in the MWC) stepped out of Mountain West Conference play and earned a three set victory (25-15, 25-21, 28-26) against the Adams State Grizzlies (7-7 overall, 4-2 in the RMAC), on Tuesday night in Laramie.
"Hopefully this match will help us gain some momentum going into CSU," said head coach Carrie Yerty. "Right now, we need to continue on being disciplined blockers and defenders, or we will struggle against good teams. Over the next several days we will use this win to prepare for our next match."
Outside hitter Jodi Purdy led the way for the Cowgirls with 12 kills, while adding two digs and service aces. She was followed by Dani Bedore with ten kills, five assists and a .412 (10-3-17) hitting percentage, while Lauren Whitney added nine kills. Senior libero Jessica Kagarise recorded a team high eight digs in the match. Wyoming hit .270 (43-19-89) for the match and had five blocks.
The Grizzlies were led by Darcy Jennings with 11 kills, six blocks, while hitting .440 (11-0-25), while Dominique Davis added ten kills. Adams State hit .127 (36-23-102).
The two teams battled back and forth until the Grizzlies took a 9-7 lead to start the first set. Wyoming answered with four straight points to go ahead 11-9, which they would extend to 15-12. The Cowgirls would out score Adams State 10-3 down the stretch to win the set 25-15.
In the second set, Adams State went up 4-1 but the Cowgirls scored the next seven of ten to take an 8-7 lead. The Grizzlies went on a 4-2 run to regain the lead 11-10, which Wyoming answered with a 7-3 run of their own to go back up by three, 17-14. Adams State continued to chip away at the lead and pulled to within one several times. The Cowgirls would maintain their composure and take the second set 25-21 and a 2-0 lead in the match.
The two teams played point for point in the third set with neither team gaining a significant lead. With the all tied up at five, Wyoming would go on a 6-3 run to gain the lead, 11-8. The Grizzlies answered with a 10-3 run to pull ahead 18-14. The Cowgirls battled back by scoring six of eight to even it up at 20 all. Adams State would re-take the lead and earn set point at 24-23. Wyoming chipped away again and overcame the deficit to go up 26-25. They would score the final three of four to win the set 28-26 and the match 3-0.
The Cowgirls will close out the week as they host the Colorado State Rams, on Friday, Oct. 2. The match is set for 7 p.m.
