Cowgirl Volleyball Runs Winning Streak To Ten Matches

Ithaca, N.Y. (Sept. 28, 2002) -- The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball Team(14-2 overall) closed out their non-conference schedule by winning theBig Red Invitational over the Cornell Big Red (7-4 overall) in threegames (30-25, 30-25, 30-24), on Saturday night in Ithaca, N.Y. Theirwinning streak now stands at ten matches.

Wyoming jumped out on top in the opening game of the match with a 10-3lead, which would they would maintain throughout. With the Cowgirls up18-9, the Big Red went on a 9-3 run to close the margin to three points.UW kept their composure and held off a determined Cornell team to winthe first game 30-25.

Game two also started off in favor of the Cowgirls. After being tied upat five all, they scored the next eight of the ten to go up 13-7, butCornell scored the next four points to come within two. Another smallrun by Wyoming once again opened up their advantage, despite a latecharge by the Big Red. They took the game 30-25 and a 2-0 lead in thematch.

Wyoming continued their pattern of jumping out early in the third game,9-4. Their was great play from both teams, but the Cowgirls managed tomaintain a five to six point lead throughout. They closed out the game30-24 and the match 3-0.

Michele Rauter finished the night with 17 kills and six digs, whilehitting .394 (17-4-33) for the match. Rauter also walked away with thetournament Most Valuable Player award. Setter Amy Doman recorded 42assists on the match, which earned her All-Tournament Team honors. As ateam, the Cowgirls hit .396 (47-11-91), along with six total blocks.

The Cowgirls will open up conference play at home during the upcomingweek. They will host the UNLV Rebels, on Friday night at 7:00 p.m., andthen the San Diego State Aztecs, on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. Bothmatches will be played in the MPG.
