SAN DIEGO, Calif. -
The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball Team (10-7 overall, 1-2 MW) started off their two match road trip with a three set loss (19-25, 11-25, 20-25) against the San Diego State Aztecs (8-4 overall, 1-1) on Thursday night in San Diego.
"We had a tough night tonight," said head coach Carrie Yerty. "It was a total breakdown of our serve and receive. San Diego State came out firing on all cylinders and we didn't find a way to neutralize it. We need to regroup as a team and get ready for UNLV on Saturday."
The Cowgirls were led by junior outside hitter Jodi Purdy. She finished with nine kills and five digs, while hitting .300 (9-3-20) for the match. Becky Stewart had a match high nine digs. As a team, they hit just .096 (20-13-73) and had four total team blocks. San Diego State had three players in double-figures led by Andrea Hannasch and Paije Pearson who both finished with 11 kills. Raegan Shelton followed with ten kills. The Aztecs hit .387 (48-12-93) for the match.
It was close in the early going of the first set as it was tied up at four all. The Aztecs scored the next two points to give them their first lead 6-4. Wyoming answered with three straight to help them regain a one point advantage, 7-6. San Diego State ran off six of the next seven to put them up four, 12-8, but the Cowgirls made a small dent in the lead and pulled to within two, 12-10. Unfortunately, the Aztecs responded with a 9-1 scoring run to give them a double-figure lead, 21-11. Wyoming would out score SDSU the remainder of the set and held off four set points before falling 25-19.
Wyoming scored the first point of the second set, which was answered with an 8-1 run by SDSU to put them up 8-2. The Cowgirls scored the next point to end the run, but five straight from the Aztecs extended the lead to double-figures, 13-3. UW tried to chip away at the lead and scored four of five to pull within seven, 14-7. It was never close after that as San Diego State closed out the set on an 11-4 run to win it 25-11 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third set, the Cowgirls jumped out to a 5-1 lead. San Diego State responded with a 12-1 run to give them a 13-6 advantage. The Cowgirls closed that gap to five, 15-10, but the Aztecs rallied back. They scored seven of the next ten to extend the lead back to nine, 22-13. Wyoming made one final push for a comeback which would fall short. San Diego State would win the set 25-20 and the match 3-0.
The Cowgirls will wrap up the weekend on Saturday, Oct. 1, against the UNLV Rebels. The match is set for 2:00 p.m. Mountain Time in Las Vegas.
