LAS VEGAS, Nevada - The Wyoming volleyball team (8-7 overall, 2-2 in the MWC) wrapped up their road trip with a five game loss (30-26, 20-30, 30-27, 8-30, 14-16) against the UNLV Rebels (8-5 overall, 2-1 in the MWC), on Sunday afternoon, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
UNLV jumped out to a very early 4-1 lead to begin the first game, but Wyoming battled back with a 9-4 run to take their first lead 10-8. The score was quickly evened up at ten a piece by the Rebels, but again the Cowgirls scored the next ten of twelve to open up an eight point advantage, 20-12. Wyoming continued to lead throughout by seven or eight points until an 8-2 run pulled UNLV to within three points. UW held on to win game one 30-26.
The Cowgirls fell behind again in the opening part of the second game as the Rebels went ahead 11-5. They continued to maintain that lead as Wyoming struggled to score points. Finally, UW seemed to get it going as an
11-5 run tied up the score at 16 all. The two teams traded points until UNLV scored the final 11 of 12 points to take the game 30-20.
Game three started with the Cowgirls taking the advantage 8-5, which was answered by the Rebels with a 9-1 run to go up 14-9. Wyoming responded with a 10-5 run of their own to even up the score at 19. From that point, the scoring went back and forth as neither team took more than a one or two point lead. The Cowgirls finally got the upper hand and won the game 30-27 to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
UNLV came out and dominated game four from the beginning while the Cowgirls struggled to put points on the board. The Rebels would win the game 30-8 to force a fifth and deciding game.
Wyoming jumped out quickly in the fifth game taking the lead, 7-3. UNLV battled their way back in to it with a 9-3 run to go up 12-10. Wyoming hung in there and had match point at 14-13 unfortunately the Rebels came back to win the game 16-14.
Three players for the Cowgirls finished the night with nine kills, including Rachel Smith. She finished with nine kills and a career high 19 digs. As a team, Wyoming hit only .127 (44-22-173) compared to .233 (82-34-206) by UNLV.
The Cowgirls will be on the road next weekend as they play a single match against the Colorado State Rams, on Friday night, in Fort Collins, Colo.
