In their opening match of the week, the Cowgirl volleyball team (8-6 overall, 2-1 in the MWC) fell in four games (27-30, 31-29, 30-19, 22-30) against the San Diego State Aztecs (1-13 overall, 1-1 in the MWC), on Friday night, in San Diego, Calif.

It was close early in game one as the two teams traded back and forth until a 7-1 run by the Aztecs gave them an 11-5 lead. San Diego State continued to maintain a six or seven point advantage for a good portion of the game. The Cowgirls tried to climb back into it and pulled to within four points, 23-19, but SDSU quickly regained a five point advantage. Wyoming had one more run as they scored the next five of six points which brought them to within one unfortunately it wasn't enough as the Aztecs closed out the game 30-27.

San Diego State jumped out to an early 5-1 lead to start game two, but the Cowgirls scored the next six of nine to pull within one 8-7. A very fired up Aztec team responded with five straight points to regain a 13-7 lead, which was answered by an 11-5 run by Wyoming to tie it up at 18 all. From that point in the game, the two teams traded points back and forth until the Aztecs gained the momentum with game point 29-27. The Cowgirls kept their composure, held off those two points and rallied to a 31-29 win to even up the match.

Game three saw the Aztecs come out again and take a sizeable advantage 9-3. The Cowgirls pulled to within one, but San Diego State ran off six straight points to go up 18-9. It didn't get much better for Wyoming as they managed to score only ten points in the game, while the SDSU took the game 30-19.

For the first time in the match, the Cowgirls took a 9-5 lead in game four, which was quickly answered by ten straight unanswered points by the Aztecs to make the score 15-9. A small run by the Cowgirls brought them to within three points, but that would be as close as they would get. San Diego State would win the game 30-22 and the match 3-1.

Four Cowgirls finished the match in double figures, including senior Sara Maytorena. She finished with a match high 18 kills and 16 digs, along with a .289 (18-5-45) hitting percentage. She was followed by Rachel Smith with 15 kills, Angie Hellbaum with 11 kills and Shelby Heggie with ten kills. As a team, the Cowgirls hit .243 (64-28-148) for the match.

"I thought we came out and seemed to be ready to go," said head coach Pat Stangle. "But being on the road in conference for the first time, I thought we couldn't stop their momentum. It seemed like every time we would look at the scoreboard we were behind and having to fight back, and when we were ahead we gave away easy points. Hopefully, we learned from this tonight and build upon it."

The Cowgirls will continue play on the road Sunday afternoon against the UNLV Rebels in Las Vegas, Nevada. The match is set to begin at 2:00 p.m. MT.
