Cowgirls Fall In Four Games To Aztecs

Laramie, Wyoming - A capacity crowd saw the WyomingCowgirl Volleyball Team (15-2 overall, 1-2 MWC) fall to the San Diego State Aztecs (12-8, 3-1MWC) in four games on Saturday night in Laramie.

Despite falling behind early in the first game to San Diego State, theCowgirls managed to stay close and came away with the first game 31-29.

In game two, the Aztecs jumped to a 7-1 lead, but UW would go on a 14-8run to tie it up at 15 all. The score would go back and forth withneither team taking a lead larger than two points. It wouldn't be untilthe very end that SDSU scored the final two points to take the game30-28.

The Cowgirls seemed to take control in the third game going up 10-7early. They continued to build on the lead, even five to six points.But, the Aztecs kept scrapping and fighting tieing the score at 23 andoutscoring the Cowgirls 7-3 the remainder of the way. They would win thegame 30-26 and took a 2-0 lead in the match.

San Diego State dominated the fourth game grabbing a 12-6 lead. TheCowgirls continued to battle and never gave up, but the margin was toolarge to overcome. The Aztecs would win the final game 30-23 and thematch 3-1.

"San Diego State is a very good team, and I'm glad we had our chances,"said head coach Jim Barnes. "They're a solid team and one of the top inthe conference. We won the first game, had our chances in the secondonly losing by two points and in the third had control up severalpoints, but their veteran players stepped up and took that game from us.I'm proud of the way we battled and if we continue to get better we'llbe able to beat those type of teams."

The Cowgirls were led by Michele Rauter, who finished with a team high22 kills and 12 digs, while hitting .278 (22-7-54) on the evening. Theystruggled hitting only .174 (68-39-167) for the match compared to theAztecs .281 (62-24-135), while SDSU also outblocked the Cowgirls 17-8.

Wyoming will hit the road next week against the Air Force AcademyFalcons, on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m., in Colorado Springs and thenagainst the New Mexico Lobos, on Friday night at 7:00 p.m., inAlbuquerque.
