Cowgirl Volleyball Falters in Four Games against Aztecs

The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball team (8-7 overall, 2-3 in the MWC) had a tough night as they struggled offensively and fell in four games (26-30, 30-18, 27-30, 17-30) against the San Diego State Aztecs (7-11 overall, 1-5 in the MWC) on Thursday night in San Diego.

Three Cowgirls finished the match in double-figures including junior Rachel Smith. She recorded 14 kills, eight digs and two block assists. Angie Hellbaum had 12 kills and three block assists as did Annie Meyers with 12 kills and six digs. Setter Tasha Weishahn finished the match with 43 assists and a team leading 11 digs.

Three Aztecs recorded 15 kills to lead the way including Melanie Green with a double-double. She had 15 kills and ten digs. Audra Dent recorded 15 kills and six blocks while Kelly Wahlin had 15 kills and five block assists.

"I felt like the first two games we played very well," said head coach Pat Stangle. "Even in the third game we did a nice job and really battled hard. Unfortunately in the fourth game it really seemed to be an offensive struggle for us. We just need to regroup and get ready for Saturday's match with UNLV."

The Cowgirls fell behind early in game one as the Aztecs jumped out to a 6-2 lead. Wyoming battled back as they scored four of the next five to pull within one, 7-6. San Diego State went on a 4-1 run to extend their lead to 11-7. Once again, UW responded with a 5-1 run of their own to tie it up at 12 all. The Aztecs quickly regained the lead, but the Cowgirls kept within striking distance. With the score 20-18 in favor of SDSU, they would start to pull away with a 6-3 scoring run to make it 26-21. The Cowgirls would hang tough and pulled to within three 28-25 unfortunately it wasn't enough as they fell 30-26.

It was close in the early going of the second game until with it all tied up at four all the Cowgirls scored eight straight points to take their first significant lead 12-4. San Diego State fought their way back in to with a 10-3 scoring run to pull within one, 15-14. The Cowgirls kept their composure and held the Aztecs to only four points the remainder of the way to win the game 30-18 to even up the match at one all.

San Diego State took the early lead in game three 6-3, but the Cowgirls battled back by scoring four of the next six to pull within one, 8-7. The Aztecs extended their lead once again with a 5-2 scoring run to make it 13-9. Wyoming would respond once again and even it all up at 14 all. Two quick points by SDSU helped them go back up 16-14, but the Cowgirls came back with three straight points to take the lead 17-16. The two teams played very close for the next few points until the Aztecs scored a couple of points to go up two, 24-20. They looked to continue and build upon that momentum, but the Cowgirls had other ideas as they ran off five straight points to take a one point lead, 25-24. SDSU rallied right back by scoring the next six of eight to win the game 30-27.

Wyoming fell behind in game four early 11-3 as they really struggled to get anything going offensively. The Cowgirls tried to make a small run and pulled to within six 15-9 unfortunately that would be as close as they would get. San Diego State closed it out on a 15-8 scoring run to take the game 30-17 and the match 3-1.

The Cowgirls will close out the weekend against the UNLV Rebels, on Saturday, Oct. 7. The match is scheduled to start at 8:00 p.m. MT.
