Wyoming Volleyball Wins Non-Conference Match

Omaha, Neb. - The Cowgirl Volleyball Team (13-6, 2-2 in the MWC) earned a hard fought four game victory (30-28, 30-23, 25-30, 30-26) against the Creighton Bluejays (7-9 overall, 4-1 in the MVC) in a non-conference match up, on Monday night, in Omaha.

After Creighton took a very early 2-1 lead the Cowgirls answered with a 6-2 run to gain their first advantage of the match, 7-4. That lead would grow to five points but the Bluejays battled back to close the margin to 12-10. Another scoring run from Wyoming, which included three unanswered, helped them regain a six point lead, 18-12. Down 22-15, CU continued to fight by scoring the next nine of thirteen to pull within two, 26-24, and eventually tieing it up at 26. It would go down to the end as the Cowgirls would come out on top with a 30-28 win in game one.

It was tight to begin the second game as the two teams traded points back and forth. The Cowgirls were the first to gain a significant lead, 10-7, but Creighton scored a couple to pull within one. Wyoming pulled away again going up by four unfortunately once again the Bluejays would battle back and never allow the Cowgirls to hold the lead for very long. A 7-2 run from UW pushed the margin to six points, 23-17, and they seemed to really gain control of the game despite an extremely determined CU team. The Cowgirls would take game two, 30-23, and a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Bluejays came out in game three fired up as they took a 5-1 lead. Wyoming pulled to within one, but Creighton scored the next seven of eight points to open up a 12-5 advantage. An extremely composed Cowgirl team responded with eight straight points to take their first lead of the game 13-12. CU quickly regained the lead with three straight, but Wyoming evened things up at 16 all. A 7-3 run from Creighton once again gave them a four point lead, 23-19. Despite pulling to within two points, 27-25, the Cowgirls couldn't make the complete comeback as Creighton forced a fourth game, 30-25.

The momentum continued for the Bluejays as they opened up the fourth game with a 5-2 lead. Wyoming pulled within one, but a Creighton run built another four point lead, 10-6. The Cowgirls battled back with an 8-4 run of their own to even things up at 14 and the fight was on. After trading points back and forth, UW gained opened up their largest lead of the game, 24-20, which was answered with a couple from CU to pull within two. Finally, the Cowgirls would pull out the game by scoring the final four points to take the game 30-24 and the match 3-1.

"We were a little slow, but did what we needed to go to win," said head coach Jim Barnes. "We need to have a couple of good practices over the next several days and start preparing for Colorado State this weekend."

Three Cowgirls notched double-figures on the evening, including Michele Rauter. She finished the night with a double-double which included 16 kills and digs, along with a .250 (16-5-44) hitting percentage. Sara Maytorena led the team with a .269 (13-6-26) hitting percentage while recording 13 kills and five block assists. Middle blocker and MWC Player of the Week Jill Roslund finished her night with 11 kills, one block solo and five block assists. As a team, Wyoming only hit .173 (61-34-156), but finished with 13 total team blocks.

The Cowgirls will resume Mountain West Conference play on Friday hosting the Colorado State Rams. Match time begins at 7:00 p.m. in the MultiPurpose Gym.
