The Wyoming CowgirlVolleyball Team earned their first Mountain West Conference victory ofthe 2000 season against the Air Force Academy Falcons on Saturday night.
It turned out to be a well fought battle throughout the match as eachteam was seeking their first conference win of the season. The Falconsgained the early advantage in the game taking a 9-3 lead, and it lookedlike they would run away with it. The Cowgirls fought back closing thegap to 9-7, but Air Force would widen the gap to 11-7. But a drivenCowgirl squad fought back to take the game 16-14. They seemed to havethe momentum going into the second game taking the early 3-1 lead, butthat was the only lead they would hold. Air Force would tie the match atone a piece with a 15-10 victory. A spark must have been lite under theteam in game three with a dominating 15-0 win. As a team, the Cowgirlshit .417 for the game, along with Rachel Lau's four kills and .800hitting percentage. They would close out the match with a 15-8 victoryin game four to win their first conference match.
"I'm really proud of the way we pulled ourselves together tonight,"said head coach Susan Judge. "We've had quite a rough stretch the lastcouple of weeks, and it was good to see us adjust and make the playswhen it was needed.
Freshman outside hitter Michele Rauter led the way for the Cowgirlswith 16 kills, 15 digs and a .300 hitting percentage. Melissa Robinett,in only her second start of her career, had a career night with ninekills and 18 digs.
"I was also pleased with Melissa Robinett, who stepped in and playedwell for us, in the place of Jamie Burke. There were several excusesthat we could have made, but she put a stop to that. Overall, I'mpleased with our effort, and look forward to the upcoming matches."
The Cowgirls are now 7-13 overall and 1-4 in the conference. They willhost San Diego State and UNLV during the upcoming weekend.
