In their final non-conference match of the season, the Wyoming Cowgirl volleyball team (5-12 overall, 0-7 in the MWC) took a break from MWC play and hosted the Texas Tech Red Raiders (10-9 overall), on Sundayafternoon, in Laramie. The Cowgirls were swept in three games (25-30, 25-30, 22-30) by the Red Raiders.

"Texas Tech is a very good team and plays top caliber opponents every night, so they don't get rattled easily," said head coach Pat Stangle. "Volleyball is a game that momentum swings can really affect the outcome of a match. A point here or there and we win one of those games. We got knocked of the horse and we need to get back on with practice on Tuesday and get ready for Air Force and New Mexico this weekend."

Rachel Smith led the way with a team leading 12 kills and ten digs. Kelsey Loop and Andrea Seele finished with eight kills, while Michelle Weydert recorded 13 digs. Wyoming hit .167 (37-18-114) for the match, while recording six total team blocks.

Philister Sang had 17 kills, eight digs and hit .400 (17-3-35) for the Red Raiders. She was followed by Amy Charlebois with 12 kills. Texas Tech hit .290 (56-20-124) for the match.

After Texas Tech jumped out quickly with six unanswered to take the lead, the Cowgirls rallied back with a 9-2 scoring run to take their first lead of the game, 9-8. The Red Raiders evened it up at nine, but Wyoming scored the next six of nine to go up 15-12. Texas Tech would respond with five straight to regain the lead by two, which didn't last long as UW tied it up at 18. TTU would once again go up by four, 22-18, but the Cowgirls continued to battle pulling to within one, 23-22. Unfortunately that would be as close as they would get as the Red Raiders closed out the game on a 7-2 run to win the game 30-24.

Wyoming came out in game two and took an early 7-3 lead, but Texas Tech evened it up at seven. A 7-3 run by the Cowgirls put them up four, 14-10 unfortunately the Red Raiders scored the next six of eight to tie it up at 16. The lead continued to go back and forth as neither team took a significant lead, until TTU went up by three 24-21. UW pulled to within one, 25-24, but that would be as close as they would get. Texas Tech won the game 30-25 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Texas Tech opened up the third game with a 6-2 lead. The Cowgirls pulled to within two, 8-6, but the Red Raiders went on a 10-3 run to increase their lead to 18-9. Wyoming would reach double-digits unfortunately they would never be any closer than six points. TTU would win the game 30-22 and the match 3-0.

The Cowgirls will resume MWC play next week as they travel to Albuquerque and Colorado Springs. They will face the New Mexico Lobos, on Thursday, Oct. 20, and the Air Force Academy Falcons, on Saturday, Oct. 22. Both matches are set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
