The Wyoming Cowgirl volleyball team played its second-consecutive game at home in the UniWyo Sports Complex, on Thursday and came away with a four-set victory over the Boise State Broncos (11-12 overall, 3-5 Mountain West). The victory was the Cowgirls second-consecutive conference victory advancing their record to 15-8 overall and 3-5 in the MW. Senior Jodi Purdy recorded her 10th double-double of the season with 10 kills and 11 digs. It is Purdy's 54th career double-double putting her three away from tying BYU's Chelsea Goodman's 57.
Senior middle Camille Coffman led the Cowgirls in kills tying a career-high with 15. She also hit a season-high .519 (15-1-27) while adding seven total blocks on six assisted and one solo. Junior Reese Plante added 10 kills of her own hitting .455 (10-0-22) in the match. Plante had an excellent weekend recording 18 kills and no errors. She hit a combined .545 (18-0-33) in this weekend's matches. Plante also added five assisted blocks for the Cowgirls in tonight's match. Sophomore Erin Kirby led Wyoming in blocks with 10 total on nine assisted and one solo. Kirby also added seven kills to the Cowgirl total. Junior setter Rachel Keyes had 32 assists on the night. Junior libero Becky Stewart added 18 digs for the Cowgirls. As a team, the Cowgirls recorded 16 total blocks.
"Our blocking was unbelievable tonight," Cowgirl head coach Carrie Yerty said. "We were firing on all cylinders and I am proud of how this team has battled this weekend. I really believe in this team.Camille had a great night tonight. Erin had a great match blocking tonight and Reese played really well all weekend."
The Broncos jumped out to an early 5-2 lead in the first set. An unassisted kill by setter Keyes, followed by a kill from junior Calli Miller sparked a 4-1 Cowgirl run that tied the set at six. The teams traded the next four points to tie back at eight. A Bronco kill and back-to-back blocks gave them an 11-8 lead. The Cowgirls battled back scoring seven of the next 11 points to tie the set at 15 apiece. Boise State scored the next point, followed by Cowgirl Miller recording a kill and two-consecutive blocks from Plante and Miller gave UW a 18-16 advantage. The Broncos answered with a 5-2 run to take a 21-20 lead. BSU scored the next four points to close the set on a 9-2 run, winning the first set 25-20.
The second set opened with the Cowgirls scoring four of the first six points on a Kirby kill, Coffman and Kirby combined block, followed by a Coffman kill. The Broncos made a run of their own tying the set at five apiece before the Cowgirls made another run. Plante and Purdy kills sparked the 4-0 UW run to give them a 9-5 advantage. Following a timeout, the Broncos ended the Cowgirl run scoring two-straight points to pull the score to 9-7 in favor of UW. A Purdy kill sparked another run with the Cowgirls scoring six of the next eight points to take a 15-9 lead. The teams battled with the Cowgirls increasing their lead to 20-15. Wyoming scored four of the next five points to take a 24-16, advantage before Boise State made a run of its own on four-consecutive kills pulling within four at 24-20. Following a Cowgirl timeout, Coffman closed the set with a kill to give the Cowgirls a 25-20 victory and tie the match at one set apiece.
Wyoming began the third set on a 7-3 run led by back-to-back Kirby blocks, followed by a Kirby kill. The Broncos battled the Cowgirls pulling within two at 9-7. The Wyoming defense took over the next four points. A Keyes kill and three-consecutive blocks gave UW a 13-7 advantage. The Broncos scored six of the next eight points to pull within two at 15-13. A Coffman kill sparked a 5-2 run giving the Cowgirls a 19-15 lead. The Broncos made a run of their own scoring five of the next seven points to pull within one at 21-20. Back-to-back kills by Purdy and Coffman opened the door for a 4-0 run to close the set. A combined Kirby and Coffman block gave the Cowgirls a 25-20 set victory and a two sets to one match lead.
The fourth set played very close with the teams trading the first 12 points. The teams battled back and forth to a 13-13 tie before the Cowgirls began to pull away in the set. A Boise State service error opened the door for a 6-2 Wyoming run to take a 19-15 lead. The Broncos made a run pulling the score within one at 22-21. The Cowgirls advanced their lead to 24-21, before BSU made a run coming back within one at 24-23. Following a Cowgirl timeout, Purdy recorded her 10th kill of the night for the set and match winner.
Next up for the Cowgirls will be a two-game road trip. Wyoming will travel to Nevada on Thursday, Oct. 25 for a meeting with the Wolf Pack beginning at 8 p.m. MT. The Cowgirls will stay on the road on Saturday, Oct. 27 with a match against San Diego State beginning at 2 p.m. MT.
