The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball Team (15-9 overall, 5-4 MW) wrapped up their road trip with a four set loss (25-21, 13-25, 22-25, 22-25) against the Boise State Broncos (13-11 overall, 4-5 MW) on Saturday night in Boise.
"We had a tough time in serve/receive in the second set, which gave them momentum that we struggled to recover from," said head coach Carrie Yerty. "We never gave up, but couldn't gain back control. Reese (Plante) and Camille (Coffman) played a solid match for us."
Wyoming had two players in double figures led by Jodi Purdy. She finished with 15 kills and ten digs. Camille Coffman added ten kills and four blocks while hitting .450 (10-1-20) for the match. The Cowgirls hit .230 (49-20-126) for the match and had 8.5 total blocks.
Boise State was led by Breann Nesselhuf with 16 kills and 25 assists. Liz Harden followed with 13 kills and ten digs, while Darlene Nwagbuo added 11 kills and five blocks. They hit .267 (56-21-131) for the match.
The Cowgirls struck early as they opened up the match with a 6-3 advantage. They would extend that to five points, 14-9, by scoring 8 of the next 14. Boise State chipped into that lead with an 8-4 run to pull to within one, 18-17. Wyoming pulled back ahead by three, 21-18, but the Broncos scored two straight to make it a one point set, 21-20. The Cowgirls kept their composure and scored the final four of five to win the first set, 25-21.
The momentum shifted over to the Broncos in the second set as they went ahead 11-5. Wyoming scored the next point to end the run, but a 6-3 run from Boise State extended their lead to eight, 17-9. The Cowgirls couldn't put a string of points together as the Broncos held them to just four points the rest of the set. The Broncos won the second set 25-13.
Wyoming went on top 4-3 to begin the third set, which was answered with an 8-4 run by Boise State to give them a two point lead, 11-9. The Cowgirls chipped into the lead and pulled to within one, 13-12, and eventually tied it up at 16 all. The teams traded scores back and forth until the Broncos went ahead by three 21-18. Wyoming made it a one point set, 21-20, unfortunately, the Broncos outscored the Cowgirls 4-2 to win the set, 25-22.
The Cowgirls seemed to change the momentum as they scored the first three points of the fourth set. Boise State responded with eight of ten to take the lead 8-5. Wyoming went on a small run to even it up at nine all. The Broncos quickly regained a 13-10 advantage. After the Cowgirls made it 13 all, Boise State ran off six of eight to regain a 19-15 lead. Despite outscoring Boise State, the Cowgirls would lose the set 25-22 and the match 3-1.
Wyoming returns home next week for two of their final three matches in the UniWyo Sports Complex. They will face the UNLV, on Thursday, Oct. 27, and the San Diego State Aztecs, on Saturday, Oct. 29.
