FORT COLLINS, Colo. -
The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball Team (19-5 overall, 4-4 in the MWC) had a tough go as they fell in three sets (20-25,17-25, 17-25) to 15th ranked Colorado State Rams (19-2 overall, 8-0), on Friday night in Ft. Collins.
"CSU did a great job in transition tonight, and they are a great team," said head coach Carrie Yerty. "We are still a team growing into that. I'm really excited our team got to have this experience. We get another shot at them later in the season. Minch and Davisson were unstoppable from the outside. We were a little bit overwhelmed, not quite so brave, but when you have an opportunity to play a good team you can learn and grow from that. I'm not disappointed with my team. They followed the game plan and offensively did some good things. We just let it get away from us."
Wyoming was led by senior Lauren Whitney who recorded seven kills, three digs and two block assists. Calli Miller and JennaRae Jester each finished with five kills and Jester added five blocks. The Cowgirls hit .075 (26-19-93) and recorded six total blocks.
CSU had two players in double figures led by Jacque Davisson who had 12 kills and ten digs. Danielle Minch also recorded 12 kills, plus two block solos and two block assists. The Rams hit .313 (49-18-99) and out dug the Cowgirls 41-26.
Colorado State would score the first point of the match, which was answered with four straight by the Cowgirls to give them a 4-1 advantage. The Rams scored the next three of four points to pull within one, 5-4. UW would maintain a one to two point lead until CSU evened it up at eight all. Wyoming would go on a 5-3 run to extend their lead back to three, 13-10, but seven unanswered by the Rams gave them a 17-13 lead. After a Wyoming timeout, they would score the next two points to pull within two, 17-15. Unfortunately, they couldn't mount a comeback in the first set as they fell 25-20.
Wyoming started off the second set strong as they opened up a 6-3 lead. CSU scored three of the next four to pull within one, 7-6, but a couple of points by the Cowgirls gave them a 9-6 advantage. The Rams answered back with a 5-1 run to take a one point lead, 11-10, which they extended to four, 17-13. Wyoming would finally end the run but could only manage to score three points the remainder of the set as the Rams took the set 25-17 and a 2-0 lead in the match.
The momentum continued on the side of Colorado State to begin the third set as they jumped out to a 4-1 lead. The Cowgirls scored four of the next five to tie it up at five all. The two teams traded scores back and forth until three straight points by the Rams gave them a three-point advantage, 12-9. Wyoming responded with a small run to even it all up at 13, but once again a CSU responded with an 8-3 run to put them ahead by five, 21-16. They would then score the final four of five to win the set, 25-17, and the match 3-0.
Wyoming will only have one conference match next week as they travel to California to take on the San Diego State Aztecs. The match is set for Thursday night at 8:00 p.m. MT.
