The University of Wyoming volleyball team lost their seventh straight match on Thursday night, suffering a 3-0 defeat to the Colorado State Rams at Moby Gym in Fort Collins, Colo.
The Cowgirls are now 8-12 overall and 2-7 in the Mountain West Conference. The Rams improve their overall record to 15-6, 9-2 in the MWC. CSU has now won 18 straight in the series between the two schools. After beginning MWC play with a win at New Mexico, UW has dropped nine of their last ten matches.
Despite playing the Rams point-for-point in game one, UW could never grab the lead and lost a close game 30-28. In game two, CSU jumped out to a huge 11-0 lead and cruised to a 30-18 win. Game three would be another tight contest, but after Wyoming grabbed their only lead of the match at 23-22, the Rams closed strong and won the game 30-25 and the match 3-0.
A strong team hitting performance by CSU was the telling statistic of the night, as the Rams outhit the Cowgirls .291 to .152.
The Cowgirls were led offensively by freshman Annie Meyers and junior Angie Hellbaum who had ten kills apiece. Meyers also recorded ten digs for a double-double on the evening. Sophomore setter Tasha Weishahn dished out 36 assists and had 18 digs. Sophomore libero Samantha Eley matched Weishahn and notched a team-high 18 digs as well. UW junior Lauren Scott had six block assists.
CSU was paced by Jaime Strauss with 12 kills. Tessa Nelson and Mekana Barnes contributed 11 kills each, while setter Ashley Fornstrom had 45 assists and ten digs. Katelin Batten recorded 20 digs for the Rams.
Next up, Wyoming will stay on the road and travel to Colorado Springs, Colo. for a match-up with the Air Force Falcons, Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. The last time the two teams met was Sept. 28, 2006 as the Cowgirls defeated the Falcons 3-0 in Laramie. Wyoming has defeated Air Force five straight matches.
