SAN DIEGO, Calif. -
The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball Team (16-9 overall, 4-6 in the MW) closed out their road trip with a four set loss (21-25, 28-30, 25-20, 18-25) against the San Diego State Aztecs (16-7 overall, 7-3 in the MW), on Saturday afternoon, in San Diego.
Senior Jodi Purdy led the way with her second double-figure kill match of the week with 18 kills. She added nine digs and seven total blocks while hitting .368 (18-4-38) for the match. Calli Miller followed with nine kills and six digs. Libero Becky Stewart finished with a match high 23 digs. The Cowgirls hit .200 (53-23-150) for the match and had 19 total team blocks.
San Diego State had three players in double-figure kills led by Michelle Waber. She equaled Purdy with 18 kills. Raegan Shelton added 14 kills followed by Andrea Hannasch with 12 kills and nine total blocks. The Aztecs hit .191 (62-31-162) on the match.
The two teams traded scores through the first 12 points to begin the match making it 6-6. After a kill by Andrea Hannasch, the Cowgirls scored four straight points to go ahead 10-7. Out of a timeout, SDSU ran off three of four to pull to within one, 11-10. Camille Coffman stopped the run with a kill which began a 3-1 run for Wyoming to put them up 14-11. The Aztecs responded with five of the next six to pull ahead 16-15. The Cowgirls tied it up on the next side out with a kill by Jodi Purdy. San Diego State began to pull away with a 6-1 run to give them a five point lead 22-17. Wyoming would try and close the gap making it 23-20, but SDSU closed it out 25-21.
The Aztecs carried the momentum into the second set taking an early 4-2 lead which they would increase to 7-4. The two teams played even over the next eight points to make it 11-8 in favor of San Diego State. The Cowgirls would close the gap and pull ahead 14-12 with a 6-1 run, which was answered by SDSU to even it up at 16 all. Wyoming responded again by running off seven of ten giving them a four point lead, 23-19. SDSU would mount a comeback outscoring Wyoming 5-1 to earn set point 24-23. A kill by Purdy ended the run and she would score the next two points for the Cowgirls to give them set point 26-25. A kill and block assist by SDSU gave them a one point lead 27-26, which was tied up at 27 all by an Erin Kirby kill. Unfortunately, three of the next four points by the Aztecs gave them the 30-28 win in the set and a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third set, San Diego State took charge with a 7-3 advantage. Wyoming would battle back with four straight points to tie it up at seven, and then scored five of the next six to go ahead by three, 11-8. Raegan Shelton ended the run with a kill, which was answered with another 5-2 run by the Cowgirls to make the score 16-11 in favor of Wyoming. Over the next several points, UW continued to maintain a three to four point lead. The closest the Aztecs would get was 20-18 as the Cowgirls went on to win the set 25-20.
It was back and forth to begin the fourth set as neither team took more than a two point lead. With the score all tied up at nine, the Cowgirls scored three of the next four to go ahead by two, 12-10. San Diego State responded with an 11-1 run to give them an eight point advantage, 21-13. Wyoming would out score the Aztecs down the stretch, but would fall in the set, 25-18, and the match 3-1.
The Cowgirls will return home to host a set of matches next week. They will welcome the Regis Rangers, on Tuesday, Oct. 30, and the Colorado State Rams, on Friday, Nov. 2. Both matches are set for 7:00 p.m.
