SAN DIEGO, Calif. -
It was a tough night for the Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball Team (19-6 overall, 4-5 in the MWC) as they lost in four sets (23-25, 25-23, 16-25, 19-25) to the San Diego State Aztecs (12-11 overall, 5-4 in MWC), on Thursday night in San Diego.
Wyoming had two players in double-figures led by senior Lauren Whitney. She recorded a season high 18 kills, while adding three service aces and two total blocks. She was followed by Jodi Purdy with ten kills and 15 digs. JennaRae Jester hit .438 (8-1-16) for the match and had five total blocks. The Cowgirls hit .205 (51-24-132) for the match and out blocked the Aztecs 9 to 8.
The Aztecs were led by Summer Nash with a team high 15 kills and a .429 (15-3-28) hitting percentage. She was followed by Kelsey Manasco with nine kills and eight digs. San Diego State hit .273 (55-20-128) for the match.
San Diego State scored the first four of six points to take an early 4-2 lead to begin the match. The Cowgirls scored the next two points to even it up at four all, but the Aztecs made a small run to go up 7-4. Out of a timeout, Wyoming ended the run and scored the next four of six to pull within one, 9-8. Two straight points by SDSU put them back up three, 11-8, but this time the Cowgirls responded with an 8-0 run to take their first lead of the match, 16-11. The Aztecs battled back with a 7-2 run of their own to tie it up at 18 all. After Wyoming scored the next point, San Diego State ran off the next three of four to make it 22-20. Despite evening the score up at 22 all and holding off one set point, the Aztecs would win the first set 25-23.
The Cowgirls rebounded in the second set to take a 6-2 lead. San Diego State would run off six of the next seven to take their first lead, 8-7. After Wyoming scored the next point, the Aztecs scored three straight to regain an 11-8 lead, which they extended to five, 15-10. The Cowgirls tried to climb their way back into it and pulled to within two, 17-15. San Diego State scored the next two points to make it 19-15, but Wyoming wouldn't give up as an 8-0 run put them on top by four, 23-19. They would eventually gain set point at 24-21. The Aztecs made it interesting and pulled to within one, 24-23, but the Cowgirls held on to take the set 25-23.
In the third set, things would quickly shift to San Diego State's side as they jumped out to a 6-0 advantage. A kill by Lauren Whitney would finally get the Cowgirls on the board. The Aztecs would extend their lead to eight, 11-3. Wyoming would try and close the gap with a small run to bring them to within seven, 13-6. Unfortunately, SDSU responded by scoring 7 of 12 to pull ahead by nine, 20-11. The Cowgirls were never able to pull any closer as the Aztecs took the set, 25-16, to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
It was back and forth in the early going of the fourth set until SDSU took a slight 8-6 lead. The Cowgirls evened it up at eight, which was answered by a 5-1 run by San Diego State to give them a four point lead, 13-9. Wyoming would battle back as they scored six of eight to pull even at 15 all. The two teams would trade scores over the next six points until the Aztecs gained the upper hand at 21-18. They would run off the final four of five points to win the set 25-19 and the match 3-1.
Wyoming returns home next week as they host two conference matches. They will take on the Air Force Academy Falcons, on Thursday, Nov. 4, and the UNLV Rebels, on Saturday, Nov. 6.
