Volleyball Scares BYU, Then Falls 3-1

Despite a hard fought match, the WyomingCowgirl Volleyball Team fell to the 20th ranked Brigham Young Cougars,3-1, on Friday night in Provo.

The Cowgirls opened up the match very competitive matching the Cougarspoint for point. In fact, they would take the lead 6-5, and neverrelinquish it. Wyoming would win the game 15-13, taking a game off theCougars for the first time since 1997. BYU rebounded in game two witheight straight points. They would only allow the Cowgirls to score onepoint to take the game 15-1, and tie the match up at one. Brigham Youngcontinued their hot streak going up 8-1 in game three. Wyoming wouldmake a run to close the gap at 8-4. Unfortunately, they couldn'tovercome the strong hitting and blocking by BYU, falling 5-15. TheCowgirls rebounded in game four taking the early 4-1 lead, but theCougars would rally with six unanswered points. Wyoming would answerback to tie the game at seven, and the 8-7 lead. Unfortunately, itwasn't enough as BYU would close out the game 15-11 and the match 3-1.

"I don't know what happened to a team that performed on a high level,then let the bottom dropped out," said head coach Susan Judge. "I thinkwe were a little shocked by our performance, and didn't know how tohandle the pressure, which was really disappointing. We still did somegood things, I'm just dissapointed because I felt good about both ofthese matches. The bright side is we did play well in the first andfourth games, and should be able to correct some things against Utahtomorrow night."

Brigham Young was led by sophomore Sunny Tonga, who finished with 20kills, nine digs and a .679 hitting percentage. The Cougars finished thenight hitting .328 and with 15 total team blocks.

Wyoming was plagued by a .050 hitting percentage and only eight teamblocks. Freshman Michele Rauter finished the night with ten kills andeight digs.

The Cowgirls drop to 9-17 overall and 1-8 in the conference. They willplay in Salt Lake City tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. against the UtahUtes.
