The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball Team (14-11 overall, 4-7 MW) opened up their two match road trip with a four-set loss ( 22-25, 20-25, 31-29, 20-25) against the Utah State Aggies (14-7, 7-4 MW) on Thursday night in Logan.
Senior Reese Plante led the way for the Cowgirls with a season high 16 kills while hitting .306 (16-5-36) for the night. Freshman Kayla Slofkiss recorded a career high 14 kills while Laura Beach also added a career high 13 kills. Libero Becky Stewart finished with a career high 33 digs. Wyoming hit .161 (60-31-180) for the match and had nine total blocks.
Utah State was led by Tumua Etimani with 15 kills and 15 digs followed by Rachel Orr and Elle Brainard with 12 and 11 kills each. The Aggies hit .205 (54-19-171) for the match.
The match started with the two teams playing even to make the score five all. The Aggies went on a 5-1 run to take a 10-6 advantage. After a Cowgirl timeout, Utah State scored six of the next nine to extend the lead to eight, 16-8. They would maintain that lead over the next several points until Wyoming started chipping away at the lead. With the score 19-14 in favor of USU, Wyoming went on a 7-3 run to pull within one, 22-21. The Aggies scored the last four of five to take the first set, 25-22.
It was all tied up through the first six points to begin second set. Utah State scored two points to take a small lead which was answered with five straight points to take the lead 8-5. The Cowgirls responded by scoring four of the next seven points to go ahead, 12-9. The Aggies went on an 8-1 run giving them a 17-13 lead. After a UW timeout, Utah State increased the lead back to six, 20-14. Wyoming battled back to within three, 23-20. The Aggies scored the final two points to win the set, 25-20.
The momentum shifted over to the side of the Cowgirls as they took a 5-2 advantage in set three. The Aggies chipped away at the lead and took their first lead of the set, 10-7. After a Cowgirl timeout, they would go on a 6- 2 run to regain a 13-12 advantage. They would maintain a one to two point lead until Utah State evened it up at 20 all. The Aggies gained the upper hand scoring three of the next four to go up 23-21. Wyoming answered with a 3-1 run to tie it up at 24 all. Each team had several chances to not only win the set and the match. The Cowgirls scored the final two points to force a fourth set, 31-29.
Utah State regained their composure and took the early 4-1 advantage. The Cowgirls closed the gap to one, 5-4, but the Aggies scored seven of the next ten to go up by five, 12-7. Wyoming would continue to battle and eventually tied it up at 14 all. The two teams stayed even over the next eight points. With it all tied up at 18-18, the Aggies closed things out on a 7-2 run to win the set, 25-20, and the match, 3-1.
Wyoming will close out the week against the Boise State Broncos, on Saturday, Nov. 2. The match is set for 7:00 p.m. in Boise.
