San Diego, Calif. - The Cowgirl volleyball team (14-12 overall, 3-8 in the MWC) opened up the month of November with a three game loss (18-30, 26-30, 26-30) against the San Diego State Aztecs (14-11 overall, 5-5 in the MWC) on Saturday night in San Diego.
It was close to start game one of the match as neither team really gained a significant advantage. With a 7-3 scoring run, the Aztecs were the first to take a lead larger than two, 13-8. Wyoming answered with a couple of points to pull within three, but unfortunately that would be as close as they would get. The Aztecs out scored the Cowgirls 17-8, including a stretch of seven in a row, to win the first game 30-18.
Game two started off very similar as the teams traded points back and forth. Again it was the Aztecs who scored four straight to take a 9-5 lead, but the Cowgirls closed the gap to one by scoring the next four of five points. Unfortunately, SDSU answered with a 6-1 run to open up a 16-10 advantage. Wyoming continued to battle by scoring the next eight of nine to not only tie the score, but take their first lead 18-17. The fight was on from that point as the scoring went back and forth. With the score tied at 22, the Aztecs went on a 4-1 run to go up 26-23, but the Cowgirls pulled to within one. Unfortunately, they were unable to pull it out as SDSU won game two, 30-26, and took a 2-0 lead in the match.
After the Aztecs took a very early lead in game one 4-1, the Cowgirls quickly evened things up at four all. Wyoming took their first lead of the game, 8-6, after scoring the next four of five points, but SDSU tied things up at eight and from that point it was a battle back and forth. Neither team took a significant lead for the remainder of the game until San Diego State opened up a three point lead after going on a 5-2 run. The Cowgirls hung tough unfortunately in the end the Aztecs and the deficit were too much to overcome. San Diego State would win game three, 30-26 and the match 3-0.
Junior Sara Maytorena led the Cowgirls with 12 kills, while hitting .500 (12-3-18) for the match. Senior libero Amanda Miller was the leader in digs with 13. As a team, Wyoming hit .267 (43-16-101) while recording eight team blocks.
Wyoming will be on the road next week as they will face the Colorado State Rams, on Friday night at 7:00 p.m., in Ft. Collins, and then will travel to Boise, Idaho to take on the Boise State Broncos, in a non-conference match up, on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
