The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball team (11-11 overall, 5-8 in the MWC) opened up their two-match homestand with a nice three-game sweep (30-25, 30-24, 30-24) against the San Diego State Aztecs (11-10 overall, 3-7 in the MWC) on Thursday night in Laramie.
"I thought we came out and played efficiently tonight," said UW head coach Pat Stangle. "We hit and passed well, covered our passers and I thought defensively we got on their tendencies and slowed them down. I also felt some blocks by us changed the momentum. We also didn't let them off the hook when they were struggling; we continued to go after them."
Cowgirl senior Rachel Smith led the way with a team high 13 kills, while hitting .250 (13-5-32) for the match. Outside hitter Angie Hellbaum recorded 12 kills and eight digs, while Lauren Scott and Lauren Whitney each followed with ten kills. Libero Carissa Lee led the way with a team high 14 digs. The Cowgirls hit .283 (54-20-120) and had eight total blocks for the match.
The Aztecs were led by Lauren Salisbury with 11 kills and six total blocks, while Lindsey Mahan added ten kills and had a .562 (10-1-16) hitting percentage. SDSU hit .150 (38-22-107) for the match and tallied ten total team blocks.
The Cowgirls took a slight 4-2 lead in game one, but SDSU responded with a 4-2 scoring run of their own to go up one, 6-5. They would extend the lead to four, 12-8, by scoring six of the next nine points. Wyoming scored a couple of points to pull within two unfortunately the Aztecs went on another 8-5 run to make the score 20-15. The Cowgirls battled back by scoring the next nine of ten points to regain a three point lead, 24-21. San Diego State answered back and pulled to within one, 26-25, but Wyoming held on by scoring the final four points to win the game 30-25.
In the second game, Wyoming took a small 3-1 lead, but SDSU came back with four of five points to go up one. Wyoming answered with a 6-1 scoring run to make it a four point game, 10-6. The Aztecs continued to battle back and pulled to within two, 14-12. Over the next several points, the two teams played close but the Cowgirls continued to maintain their lead. Despite a good effort by San Diego State, the Cowgirls closed out the game on an 8-4 run to win the game 30-24 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
San Diego State opened up a small 5-3 lead to begin game three. Wyoming responded with a 6-1 run to go up by three points, 9-6. The Aztecs would eventually tied things up at ten then the two teams traded points. Down 18-16, SDSU scored the next four unanswered to make it a two point game, but the Cowgirls answered with a 6-2 run to make the score 24-22. After San Diego State scored the next point, the Cowgirls closed it out on an 6-1 run to win the game 30-24 and the match 3-1.
Wyoming will close things out this week as they host the UNLV Rebels, on Saturday, Nov. 3, in the UniWyo Sports Complex. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m.
