The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball Team (18-9 overall, 7-4 MW) earned a three set victory (25-13, 25-21, 25-22) against the Colorado Christian Cougars (15-13 overall, 10-6 RMAC) on Tuesday night in Laramie.
"It has been a great year playing in the UniWyo Sports Complex," said head coach Carrie Yerty. "We are so grateful for the fan support. We have a long way to go finishing out the year and this team can do some things down the stretch. I thought Rachel Keys did a nice job distributing the ball to everyone, and Megan Sipe came in and was solid."
Reese Plante led the way for the Cowgirls recording nine kills, eight total blocks and hit .467 (9-2-15) for the match. Jodi Purdy added seven kills and six blocks, while two other players finished with five kills. Wyoming hit .236 (41-16-106) on the night and recorded 13 total blocks.
Colorado Christian was led by Erica Brown with ten kills, while Tija Rudzitis added seven kills and two blocks. The Cougars hit .045 (31-26-110) for the match.
The two teams were all tied up through the first eight points of the match, 4-4. Wyoming scored the next four points to go ahead, 8-4. Colorado Christian earned the next two points to close the gap, 8-6. The Cowgirls answered with a 5-2 run to extend the lead back to five, 13-8. The Cougars never pulled any closer than four as Wyoming won the set, 25-13.
The Cowgirls carried the momentum into set two by taking a 5-1 lead. CCU scored five of the next six to pull even at six. The two teams traded scores over the next several points until a small run by UW put them up 12-9. The Cougars chipped away at the lead with a 5-3 run to close to within one, 15-14. Wyoming scored the next few points to regain a 19-15 advantage, but Colorado Christian ran off five straight points to go ahead by one, 20-19. After a timeout, the Cowgirls regrouped and out scored CCU, 6-1, to win the set, 25-21.
It was a point for point battle in the early part of set three as neither team took a significant lead. With it all even at eight, the Cowgirls scored five of six to go up 13-9. The Cougars responded with six straight points to earn a 15-13 lead. Wyoming battled back going on an 8-2 run to put them back up 21-17. Despite being out scored 5-4, Wyoming won the set 25-22 and the match 3-0.
Wyoming will be on the road to wrap up their week as they return to conference action. They will face the 24th ranked Colorado State Rams, on Friday, Nov. 4. The match is set for 7:00 p.m. at Moby Arena in Ft. Collins.
