The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball Team (14-12 overall, 4-8 MW) closed out their road trip with a three-set loss (20-25, 25-27, 24-26) against the Boise State Broncos (11-12, 5-8 MW) on Saturday night in Boise.
Reese Plante led the way for the second straight match as she recorded 14 kills and a .294 (14-4-34) hitting percentage. Erin Kirby followed with nine kills and a team high .500 (9-2-14) hitting percentage, while Bridget Shanahan recorded nine kills and four block assists. Becky Stewart had a team high 18 digs followed by Rachel Keyes with 37 assists and 12 digs. Wyoming hit .192 (45-21-125) and had six total blocks.
The Broncos were led by Alyssa Gammel with a match high 18 kills and 13 digs. Sarah Horton added nine kills and eight digs. Boise State hit .213 (49-20-136) for the night and had ten total team blocks.
Boise State started out the match on a roll as they took the early 8-3 advantage. After a Cowgirl timeout, a kill by Bridget Shanahan started a 5-2 run for UW to close the gap to two, 10-8. The Broncos responded with a couple of points to put them back up by four, 12-8. Wyoming would chip away at the lead and made it 15-13. Boise State answered back with a 6-1 run to give them their largest lead of the set, 21-14. The Cowgirls outscored BSU the remainder of the set but their comeback fell short as they would fall 25-20.
Wyoming would try to gain some early momentum in the second set as they went up 3-1. The Broncos came back with four of the next five points to take their first lead, 5-4. A kill by Shanahan evened it up and then the two teams traded the next couple of points. With it all tied up at six, Kirby recorded the next two points for Wyoming giving them an 8-6 advantage. Boise State scored the next four of six to even things up at ten all. A service error by the Broncos on the next side out would start a 5-0 run for the Cowgirls to give them a five point lead, 15-10. Out of a BSU timeout, two kills by Alyssa Gammel ended their scoring drought, but Wyoming scored four of five points to put them up by six, 19-13. The Broncos rallied back with nine straight points to give them the lead 22-20. A kill by Kirby would finally stop the scoring run by Boise State and the Cowgirls climbed their way back into it at 23 all. Setter Rachel Keyes gave UW an opportunity to win the set 24-23, unfortunately the Broncos closed out the set on a 4-1 run to win 27-25.
The momentum continue to stay on the side of Boise State as they scored seven of the first nine points to take a 7-2 lead. They would extend that advantage to eight, 11-3. Wyoming tried to chip away at the lead and went on a 7-2 run to close the gap to three, 13-10. Boise State responded with a 5-2 run of their own to increase the lead back to six, 18-12. The Cowgirls tried for one more comeback but their efforts would fall short. They would lose the set, 26-24, and the match, 3-0.
The Cowgirls will return home for two matches next week. They will host the ninth ranked Colorado State Rams, on Tuesday, Nov. 5, and the Nevada Wolf Pack, on Thursday, Nov. 7. Both matches are scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in the UniWyo Sports Complex.
