The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball team (10-12 overall, 4-7) won their second match in a row with a three game sweep (30-21, 30-24, 31-29) of the UNLV Rebels (16-9 overall, 7-6 in the Mountain West Conference) on Thursday night in Laramie.
"We played well in games one and two, and thought we would get a dog fight at some point and it was 27-27 in the third game," said head coach Pat Stangle. "I thought the difference tonight was that we made one more play than they did. This was a good win for us against a very good team in the conference. On our side, we just kept doing the things that we needed to do and it paid off in a win."
Wyoming was led by freshman Annie Meyers with 11 kills followed by Lauren Scott with ten and eight total blocks. Angie Hellbaum chipped in nine, while junior Rachel Smith recorded eight. Libero Samantha Eley led the way with a match high 19 digs along with Smith who finished with 14 digs. As a team, they hit .209 (48-20-134) and finished with 55 digs, 42 assists and nine total team blocks.
UNLV was led by Brittani Lumsden with nine kills and three blocks, followed by Lauren Miramontes with eight kills and Michelle Banks with seven. Jada Walker had a team high 13 digs, while Banks finished with 11 digs. The Rebels hit .122 (42-26-131) as a team and recorded 13 total team blocks.
The Cowgirls gained the upper hand in game one by taking a 6-3 lead, but UNLV came back with a 5-3 scoring run to pull within one, 9-8. Wyoming responded by scoring the next five of eight to go back up 14-11. They extended the lead to five with another 5-3 run to make the score 19-14. The Cowgirls continued to play well on the offensive end as they out scored the Rebels 9-2 to take a double-figure lead 26-16. They eventually closed out the game 30-21.
It was all Cowgirls to begin the second game as well as they opened up an eight point lead, 10-2. The Rebels answered back with a 7-3 run to pull within four, 13-9, and eventually one 16-15. Wyoming kept their composure and scored six of the next eight points to make it a five point game 22-17. They extended that to seven points and closed out the game 30-24 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
In game three, Wyoming took a 6-2 lead, but the Rebels scored a couple of points to pull within two, 6-4. The Cowgirls answered right back with four straight to make it 10-4. After UNLV scored two points, Wyoming ran off seven of eight points to take a double-figure lead, 17-7. The Rebels battled back with a 9-3 run to pull within four, 20-16. Wyoming seemed in control with the score 26-21 in their favor unfortunately UNLV had other ideas as they went on a 6-1 run to tie it up at 27 all. The Cowgirls gained match point at 29-28 which was quickly answered by the Rebels. Finally, Wyoming scored the final two points to win the game 31-29 and the match 3-0.
The Cowgirls will close out the weekend against the San Diego State Aztecs, on Saturday night, Nov. 4. The match will begin at 8:00 p.m.
