Cowgirl Volleyball Opens Up Weekend With Three Game Sweep

The Wyoming Cowgirl volleyball team (8-13 overall, 3-7 in the MWC) started off the weekend with an impressive three game sweep (30-21, 30-27, 30-25) against the San Diego State Aztecs (14-10 overall, 6-5 in the MWC) on Friday night in Laramie.

"We beat a good team tonight," said head coach Pat Stangle. "They were one of the top teams in the conference battling for a chance to finish second with a good run in these last matches of the season. They needed a win, but I thought we played a complete match tonight.

"We simplified things this week in practice and worked on the things we are good at, and if that worked in our favor on the court that would be great. I felt we stayed on task, and as a result we won a big match."

Two Cowgirls finished the evening in double-digits, including junior Andrea Seele. She tied a season high 14 kills, while hitting an impressive .636 (14-0-22) for the match. Sophomore Angie Hellbaum recorded ten kills while three players finished with nine each. Carissa Lee and Samantha Eley both finished their nights with eight digs, while Lauren Scott had a team high four blocks. Wyoming hit .348 (53-14-112) for the match and had nine total team blocks.

San Diego State was led by Melanie Greene, who finished with a team high 13 kills along with 11 digs. Libero Aime Cordeiro recorded a 13 digs to lead the way in that category. the Aztecs hit .142 (47-29-127) for the match.

Wyoming started off game one on a good note as they took an early 8-4 lead, but San Diego State responded with a 7-3 run to even things up at 11. The Cowgirls quickly regained the lead 13-11 and scored the next seven of eleven to go up by five, 20-15. They would maintain their advantage the remainder of the way even increasing their lead to as many as nine points as they took the first game, 30-21.

The two teams traded points in the early going of the second game until the Cowgirls opened up a small 7-4 lead. SDSU pulled to within one, but Wyoming continued to maintain their lead. With the score 10-8 in favor of UW, the Aztecs went on a 7-2 run to take a three point advantage, 15-12. The Cowgirls had a response of their own as they scored the next seven of nine to regain the lead, 19-17. SDSU once again pulled to with in one, but the Cowgirls quickly built their advantage back up to 24-21. The Aztecs wouldn't go away quietly as they tied it up at 24, but Wyoming kept their composure and closed out the game on a 6-3 run to win it, 30-27, to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

It was all Wyoming to begin game three as they jumped out to the 7-2 advantage. SDSU battled their way back in to it with an 8-5 run to pull within two, 12-10, and eventually tied it up at 15. The Cowgirls would respond by scoring the next six of seven to go up 21-16 and never looked back as the Aztecs were never able to pull any closer than four points. Wyoming would win the game, 30-25, and the match 3-0.

The Cowgirls will wrap up the weekend tomorrow night by hosting the UNLV Rebels beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the UniWyo Sports Complex.
