The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball Team (11-16 overall, 1-11 in the Mountain West Conference) suffered a tough five set loss (20-25, 25-22, 25-13, 23-25, 14-16) against the San Diego State Aztecs (11-12 overall, 5-7 in the MWC), on Thursday night, in Laramie.
"JennaRae (Jester) showed incredible maturity and perseverance tonight, along with Jodi Purdy who had a solid match under pressure," said UW head coach Carrie Yerty. "As a team we showed moments of greatness but maturing as a young team is difficult and a loss like this is very tough. However, this match is over and we must move forward and focus on our next opportunity. I believe in this team and know that today seems gloomy but our future is bright."
Three Cowgirls led the way in the match. Lauren Whitney recorded 19 kills and a career high 23 digs. Jodi Purdy recorded 21 kills and 16 digs, while JennaRae Jester had 15 kills and a .750 (15-0-20) hitting percentage. Wyoming hit .218 (65-28-170) for the match.
The Aztecs were led by Andrea Hannasch with 12 kills and nine block assists, while Hannah Evans added 11 kills and nine digs. SDSU hit .167 (56-27-174) and out blocked the Cowgirls 16-7.
San Diego State scored the first six of nine to take a small 6-3 lead. They would increase that margin to five, 12-7. The Cowgirls would chip away at the lead and pull to within three, 13-10, unfortunately a 7-5 run put the Aztecs up 20-15. Wyoming would respond with a 5-2 run to make it 22-20. Their comeback would fall short as SDSU took set one, 25-20.
After the Cowgirls scored the first point of the second set, San Diego State scored six of seven to make it 6-2. Wyoming went on a 5-1 run to even it up at seven. The Aztecs quickly regained a 12-8 advantage. Wyoming battled back and tied it up at 16, and eventually took the lead 18-16. SDSU tied it up a couple of times but the Cowgirls kept their composure and earned a 25-22 win in the set.
The Cowgirls dominated the third set as they took an 11-2 lead. With a 5-1 run, they increased their advantage to double-figures, 16-3. Despite being out scored 10-9, Wyoming would win the set 25-13.
It was close in the early going of the fourth set until the Aztecs scored five unanswered to go up 8-4. The Cowgirls would pull to within two, 9-7 unfortunately SDSU scored the next seven of ten to regain a 16-10 advantage. Wyoming battled back with an 8-2 run to tie it up at 18. The Aztecs would score the next five points to go up 23-18. The Cowgirls would hold off three set points but fell 25-23.
After SDSU went up 4-3, the Cowgirls scored five straight points to take an 8-4 advantage. The Aztecs went on an 8-4 run to pull within two, 12-10. Wyoming scored the next point and San Diego State responded with the final six of eight points to win the set 16-14 and the match 3-2.
The Cowgirls close out the weekend on Saturday, Nov. 7, against the Air Force Academy Falcons. The match is slated to begin at 7:30 p.m.
