The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball team (11-14 overall, 5-9 MWC) wrapped up their road trip with a disappointing three game loss (21-30, 27-30, 22-30) against the 21st ranked BYU Cougars (22-4 overall, 11-3 MWC) on Saturday night in Provo.
Wyoming was led by Rachel Smith who finished with a team high 11 kills along with four digs. She was followed by Annie Meyers and Lauren Scott who both had eight kills each. Meyers also recorded ten digs. Samantha Eley recorded 16 digs, while Tasha Weishahn had 34 assists and 11 digs. As a team, they hit only .057 (42-34-141).
Chelsea Goodman finished her night with 20 kills and four digs for the Cougars followed by Erica Lott with nine kills and eight digs. Libero Annie Pinegar recorded a match high 20 digs. The Cougars hit .258 (46-15-120) for the match.
After falling behind in the first game 4-2, the Cowgirls answered with a 6-1 scoring run to pull ahead by three 8-5. The Cougars scored the next four of five to make it all even at nine all. Wyoming scored the next four straight to regain a four point advantage, but BYU came back with the next five points to take a one point advantage. The two teams would trade a couple of points until with it all tied up at 16 BYU would gain some momentum and score the next four of five to go up three 20-17. It was never close after that as the Cougars held the Cowgirls to four points the rest of the way as they took game one 30-21.
The Cougars took the lead in game two, 5-1. Wyoming battled back with a 4-1 run to pull within one, 6-5, but BYU scored the next four of five to make the score 10-6. The Cowgirls tried to stay close and scored six of ten to pull within two, 16-14, and eventually tied it up at 16 all. BYU quickly went back up by five, 21-17, but Wyoming closed to within two once again 21-19. The Cougars scored the next five of seven to make it 26-21. One final push by the Cowgirls made it a two point game 28-26, but it wasn't enough as BYU took the game 30-27 and a 2-0 lead in the match.
Wyoming jumped out in the third game to take a 3-1 lead, but scored the next five of eight to even it up at six all. They would then score the next three points to go up three 9-6. The Cowgirls answered with two unanswered to pull within one, 9-8, unfortunately the Cougars scored five of six to make it 15-9 which they extended to seven 20-13. It would never be close as BYU won the game 30-22 and the match 3-0.
Wyoming will wrap up the regular season this week at home as they host the TCU Horned Frogs, on Thursday, Nov. 16, and the New Mexico Lobos, on Saturday, Nov. 18. The TCU match is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. while the New Mexico match will start at 2:00 p.m. in the afternoon.
