FORT WORTH, Texas -
The Wyoming Cowgirl volleyball team came back from being two sets down to defeat the TCU Frogs in five sets (23-25, 9-25, 25-21, 25-21, 15-12) on Saturday afternoon in Fort Worth. The Cowgirls moved to 20-10 overall and 9-5 in league play, while the Frogs fall to 22-6 and 9-5 in the Mountain West.
"I'm proud of this team," said head coach Carrie Yerty. "We had to have a gut check between sets two and three to decide how we wanted to finish the regular season. I've never seen a team compete with more heart than tonight. Becky Stewart was solid all match and provided stability when we needed it. Jodi showed why she is an all-conference selection. Our blocking was great and both middles worked hard offensively to open up our pin players. This team grew today and this was a total team effort."
Wyoming was led by junior Jodi Purdy who finished with her 20th double-double of the season. She recorded 15 kills and 23 digs, while hitting .350 (15-1-40) for the match. Calli Miller added 11 kills while Becky Stewart had a team high 22 digs. The Cowgirls hit .280 (57-11-164) for the match and out blocked the Frogs 13.5-3.0.
TCU was led by Kristen Hester with 15 kills and five digs. Sloane Sunstrum added 11 kills and 15 digs, while Yvonne Igodan recorded 19 kills. The Frogs hit .266 (72-22-188) for the match.
Wyoming scored the first five of eight points to begin the match taking a 5-3 lead. The Frogs responded with an 8-3 run to go ahead by three 11-8, which they would extend to four 16-12. The Cowgirls battled back by running off five of the seven to pull within one, 18-17. The two teams played virtually even the rest of the way as TCU took the first set 25-23.
The Frogs carried the momentum over into the second set as they took a 12-3 lead. After the Cowgirls scored the next point to end the run, TCU ran off 8 of the next 12 points to extend their double figure lead to 20-7. Wyoming would only score two more points in the set as the Frogs won by the score of 25-9.
In the third set, TCU took a small 3-1 which was answered with a 5-1 run by UW to give them a two point advantage, 6-4. The Cowgirls continued to hold on to a small lead until the Frogs evened it up at 12 all. Three straight points from UW quickly put them back up 15-12. TCU closed the gap to one, 16-15, but the Cowgirls scored five of nine to make it 21-17. The Frogs would out score UW down the stretch, but the Cowgirls held on to win the set, 25-21.
The scoring went back and forth to begin the fourth set. With the score tied at five all, the Cowgirls scored five of the next six to go ahead by four, 10-6. They continued to hold the lead until TCU evened it up at 15 all. Wyoming would score the next point and built the lead back to 21-17. The Frogs would try to chip away at the lead and pulled to within one, 22-21, but the Cowgirls scored the final four points to win the set 25-21.
The score was all even through the first eight points, 4-4. The Cowgirls made a small run to give them an 8-5 led. After a TCU score, they increased that lead to four, 12-8. The Frogs battled back and tied it up at 12 all. Wyoming kept their composure and scored the final three points to win the set 15-12 and the match 3-2.
The Cowgirls will be at the 2011 Mountain West Conference Tournament beginning Friday, Nov. 18. Their seed will be determined following the match between San Diego State and Air Force.
