The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball Team (22-7 overall, 7-6 in the MWC) closed out their road trip with a three set loss (25-21, 25-15, 25-19) against the New Mexico Lobos (18-8 overall, 10-3 in MWC), on Saturday afternoon, in Albuquerque.
"We were effective at times and played well today, but New Mexico was so overpowering today," said head coach Carrie Yerty. "They are a team on a mission. Overall, I was happy that we split on the road and we are looking forward to coming home and finishing things out strong."
Wyoming was led by sophomore Jodi Purdy who recorded a team high eight kills plus eight digs. She followed by JennaRae Jester and Reese Roehrkasse with seven kills, and Lauren Whitney with five kills and 11 digs. Freshman Becky Stewart recorded a career high 16 digs. The Cowgirls hit .106 (35-21-132) for the match.
The Lobos were led by Kelly Williamson with 15 kills and a .324 (15-3-37) hitting percentage, while Lisa Meeter added 12 kills and ten digs. UNM hit .230 (43-15-122) for the match and out blocked Wyoming 12 to 3.
The Cowgirls would score the first point to begin the match, which was answered with four of five points by New Mexico to give them a 4-2 lead. Wyoming battled back with a 5-2 run to help them retake a 7-6 lead. They would increase that margin to two, 9-7, but the Lobos ran off six straight points to put them up 13-9. The two teams traded points as UNM continued to hold on to the five point lead, 18-13. The Cowgirls battled their way back into it by scoring six of eight to close the gap to one, 20-19. Unfortunately, the Lobos would close out the set on a 5-2 run to win the first set, 25-21.
It was close through the first part of the second set as the teams were all tied up at five. The Cowgirls would take a 7-6 lead but the Lobos would score nine of ten points to give them a seven point advantage, 15-8. Wyoming ended the scoring run, unfortunately New Mexico went on a 6-0 run to extend the lead to double-figures, 22-11. They would go on to take the set 25-15 and a 2-0 lead in the match.
Wyoming came out strong to begin the third set as they opened up a 5-1 lead to start the third set. The Lobos responded with six straight points to give themselves their first lead of the set, 7-5. The Cowgirls kept their composure and ran off five of seven to give them the one point advantage, 10-9. After New Mexico tied it up at ten, the two teams traded scores back and forth through the next ten points. With the score all knotted up at 15, the Lobos would score the final 10 of 14 points to win the set 25-19 and the match 3-0.
Wyoming will have one match next week as they host the #13th ranked Colorado State Rams, on Thursday, Nov. 18. The match is set for 5:00 p.m. in the UniWyo Sports Complex.
