The Wyoming Cowgirl Volleyball Team (19-11 overall, 6-8 in the MW) opened up their final road trip with a four set loss (25-23, 26-28, 14-25, 19-25) against the Boise State Broncos (16-13 overall, 7-6 in the MW), on Thursday night, in Boise.
The Cowgirls were led by Jodi Purdy, who recorded 13 kills, 14 digs and four block assists. She was followed by Calli Miller with 11 kills, while Erin Kirby finished the night with six kills and ten total blocks. Wyoming hit 46-18-143 (.196) and had 13 total team blocks.
Boise State had three players in double-figures led by Liz Harden. She finished with 16 kills. Alyssa Gammel and Sarah Webster each added 12 kills each. The Broncos hit .240 (68-27-171) for the match.
Wyoming got going on the scoreboard first with a kill from Erin Kirby and two attack errors from Boise State to take a 3-0 lead. The Broncos quickly tied it up at three all by two kills and an attack error. The Cowgirls regained the lead on the next side out and then the two teams traded scores the next ten points. With it all tied up at nine, Boise State scored the next seven of nine to give them their first significant lead of the set 16-11. Wyoming tried to climb their way back into it with a 5-2 run to make it 18-16. The Broncos answered by scoring five of the next seven to take a solid 23-18 lead. The Cowgirls wouldn't go away as they scored five unanswered started by a Reese Plante kill to even up the score at 23 all. After a Boise State timeout, a kill from Bridget Shanahan and an attack error by the Broncos gave Wyoming a 25-23 win in the first set.
Boise State gained the early lead, 4-2, to begin the second set. A kill by Calli Miller and an attack error by the Broncos evened up the score at four all. Four of the next five points scored by BSU helped them regain an 8-5 advantage. The Cowgirls chipped away at the lead by scoring 7 of the next 11 to tie it back up at 12. An attack error by Boise State gave Wyoming a one point advantage, 13-12, but a kill on the next side out made the score 13-13. The Cowgirls went on a small run to give them a three point lead, 17-14. After a BSU timeout, they closed the gap to one, 18-17. Calli Miller would record a kill on the next serve but Boise ran off five of seven to make it 22 all. The teams traded scores for the next couple of points until the Broncos earned set point 24-23. The Cowgirls would hold off three set points but couldn't hold off a fourth as Boise State won set two, 28-26.
In the third set, the Broncos carried the momentum out of the break as they opened up a 7-1 advantage. A kill by Whitney Smith ended the run, but Boise State extended their lead to eight, 12-4, with a 5-2 run. Out of a Wyoming timeout, the Bronco lead increased to double-figures as they ran off 8 of 11 to give them a 20-7 advantage. The Cowgirls were never in it as they fell 25-14 in the set to go down 2-1 in the match.
Boise State seemed to gain the upper hand in the fourth set by taking a 4-1 lead behind four kills. The Cowgirls answered with three straight to even it up at four all. The Broncos quickly regained a 7-4 advantage with two kills and a service ace. Wyoming would try and close the gap with a small run to make it 9-7, but BSU recorded two kills and a service error by UW helped them back to a 12-8 lead. A 4-1 run from the Cowgirls brought them to within one, 13-12. The Broncos responded with a 7-3 run of their own to increase the lead back to six, 21-15. Wyoming could not mount a comeback as they fell in the set 25-19 and 3-1 in the match.
The Cowgirls will close out the week on Saturday night against the Air Force Academy Falcons. The match is set for 7:00 p.m. in Colorado Springs, Colo.
