Salt Lake City, Utah -- In their finalmatch of the regular season, the Wyoming Cowgirl VolleyballTeam (20-10 overall, 5-9 MWC) fell in four games to the UtahUtes (21-7 overall, 10-4 MWC), on Saturday night in SaltLake City.
The Utes opened up game one with a 9-2 run to take theearly lead. They held on to that advantage, which would growto as many as 14 points. The Cowgirls struggled to scorewith only 16 in the game. Utah took the game 30-16.
It was back and forth to start the second game, but theCowgirls did take their first lead of the match 7-5. Theywould also go on a 9-6 run to open up a 16-11 advantage,which eventually grew to 21-14. Utah continued to battle andwith an 11-4 run tied it up at 25, but the Cowgirls answeredback scoring the next five of seven points to win the game30-27.
Utah jumped ahead in game three with an 8-4 lead, whichopened up to 14-6 after a 6-2 run. The Cowgirls answeredwith a 5-2 run to close within three, 15-12, but the Utescontinued to maintain their lead. They outscored theCowgirls 15-7, including a stretch of eight points in a row,to win the game 30-19.
The Cowgirls fell behind early 7-2 in game four, butbattled back with a 12-7 run to tie it up at 14. With it alleven at 17 all, Utah regained the lead 22-18, but once againthe Cowgirls tied it up at 24 all. The Utes were just toostrong as they scored the final five of seven points to winthe game 30-26 and the match 3-1.
Three Cowgirls finished the match in double-figures inkills, including sophomore Sara Maytorena. She finished witha team high 13 kills, along with six digs and four blockassists. Junior Michele Rauter led the team in digs with 15along with chipping in 11 kills, while sophomore JillRoslund had ten kills and four block assists. As a team, theCowgirls struggled hitting only .048 (47-40-157) on theevening.
Wyoming will once again face the Utah Utes, on Thursday at11:00 a.m., at the Mountain West Conference Championships inFt. Collins, Colo.
