Wyoming Volleyball Earns Victory Over Falcons

The Wyoming Cowgirl volleyball team (11-15 overall, 6-9 in the MWC) started off the weekend with a three game sweep (30-18, 30-16, 30-25) against the Air Force Academy Falcons (5-26 overall, 1-14 in the MWC) on Friday night in Laramie.

"We came out from the beginning and did a nice job in the first two games," said head coach Pat Stangle. "I was pleased with that, unfortunately we let down just a little and lost our focus in the third game. Volleyball is a game of momentum swings, but we managed to hang on and win in three."

Three Cowgirls finished the evening in double-digits, including sophomore Rachel Smith. She had a team high 14 kills and six digs while hitting .462 (14-2-26) for the match. Angie Hellbaum recorded 11 kills followed by Andrea Seele with ten. Wyoming hit .367 (50-14-98) for the match and out dug Air Force 52-30.

The Falcons were led by Brooke Akers who recorded 14 kills and hit .619 (14-1-21). Air Force hit .160 (33-16-106) and had six total team blocks.

Wyoming took a very early 4-1 lead in game one which Air Force quickly evened up at four all. The Cowgirls would come back by scoring the next five straight to go up five, 9-4. The Falcons scored a coupled of point to pull within two but UW answered with an 11-2 run to increase their lead to double-digits 20-9. It was never close as the Cowgirls won the game, 30-18.

After it was tied at two in the early part of the second game, the Cowgirls went on a 14-2 run to go up 16-4. As the Falcons really struggled to even reach double-digits, Wyoming was hitting on all cylinders by taking the second game 30-16 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

In game three, Wyoming opened up a 7-3 advantage but Air Force hung around going on a 10-3 run to take the lead 13-10. The Cowgirls rallied back with seven straight to regain a four point lead, 17-13. Air Force managed to pull within two unfortunately they couldn't come back as UW won the game 30-25 and the match 3-0.

The Cowgirls will close out the regular season tomorrow night against the New Mexico Lobos beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the UniWyo Sports Complex.
