Wyoming Can't Get Past #3 Utah in MWC Volleyball Championship

    In the opening match of the 2002 Mountain West Conference Championship at Colorado State, the third-seeded Utah Utes defeated sixth-seeded Wyoming in three-games, 32-30, 30-20, 30-25.

    Utah was led by middle blocker Kim Turner with 11 kills, while middle blocker Brenda Beal had nine kills and hit .389 in the match. Setter Kelsie Kartchner led the team with 34 assists and had five service aces. She also added 10 digs. Libero Jackie Morrill led all players with 11 digs, while Turner had six blocks.

    Wyoming was led by outside hitter Michele Rauter with 14 kills and 10 digs, while libero Amanda Miller also had 10 digs in the match. Setter Amy Doman had a team-high two aces and had 36 assists.

    The Cowgirls were up 28-24 in game one and had four game points, but were unable to convert. At 29-26, Turner had a kill for Utah, then Schulz had one in the next play and Turner knotted the score at 29-29 with her fourth of five kills in the game. Wyoming would again take the lead with a kill by Maytorena and Turner would tie the score again. The Cowgirls then committed two attack errors for the Utes win.

    Utah advances to the semifinals for the fourth straight year and will face the winner of the #2 San Diego State-#7 New Mexico match which begins at 1:30 p.m.

  • As a No. 3 seed, Utah had never swept an opponent in the quarterfinals of the MWC Tournment until today. The Utes defeated No. 6 SDSU 3-2 in 1999, and No. 6 UNLV 3-1 in 2000. The Utes were a No. 2 seed last year and went on to win the title.

  • Utah head coach Beth Launiere recorded her 250th career victory with today's win over Wyoming. The Utes advanced to the MWC Tournament semifinals for the fourth straight year and improved to 6-2 overall in MWC Tournaments.

  • Wyoming's 20 wins this season are the most since 1989. Jim Barnes is the third Cowgirls coach to lead the team to 20 wins in his inaugural season (Jim Stone, 1979; Gerry Gregory in 1983).

  • Kim Turner moved into seventh place on the Ute career kills list with 1,064. She is also seventh on the Ute total blocks career list with 472. Turner is fourth on the MWC career kill list (1,064) and third on the MWC career block list (472).

  • Utah's Kelsie Kartchner recorded her fourth double-double of the year with 34 assists and 10 digs.

  • Wyoming's Michele Rauter recorded her season league-best 19th double-double with 10 digs and 14 kills. Rauter has 27 career double-doubles.

  • After recording 10 digs vs. the Utes, Michele Rauter moved into the Wyoming career top 10 for digs and currently has 837. Rauter also ranks fourth on the Wyoming single-season kill list after recording 496 in 2002.

  • Michele Rauter also moved into second place on the MWC all-time dig list with 827, surpassing Colorado State's Courtney Cox.
