Shanahan Paces Cowgirls in Comeback Win Over San Jose State

Sophomore Bridget Shanahan recorded a career-high 19 kills in the Cowgirls five-set (21-25,13-25,25-18,25-22,15-13) comeback win over San Jose State on Saturday evening. Wyoming trailed 2-0 after two sets, but won the final three frames as UW won their school record fifth consecutive match in the Mountain West.

Shanahan's 19 kills was the most by a Cowgirl this season. She hit .457 (19-3-35) on the night. Senior Reese Plante added 13 kills for Wyoming. Senior Rachel Keyes dished out 49 assists on the night.

Junior Erin Kirby was the Cowgirls defensive leader with seven blocks on the night. She also added 12 kills for the Cowgirls. Senior Becky Stewart led Wyoming with 26 digs on the night.

San Jose State's Hannah Blume recorded a match-high 20 kills. Setter Michaela Leonard recorded 59 assists on the night for the Spartans.

The Spartans took the opening frame 25-21. SJSU used a three-point run and a four-point-run in the set to gain separation on the Cowgirls in the opening set. San Jose added 16 kills in the frame, as the Cowgirls managed 11 kills. Kirby got defensive in the set to lead Wyoming, recording four blocks.

 The Spartans had a match-high 18 kills in second frame and hit a match-high .459 (18-1-37) to take the set 25-13. The Cowgirls offense struggled in the frame committing six errors.

The Cowgirls erased an early 4-1 led to take the third set 25-18. Wyoming used a four-point run to take a 5-4 lead. Wyoming later used a 6-0 run to take the advantage in the frame that UW sustained the entire set. UW used 15 kills in the stanza with four blocks. Wyoming hit .333 (15-4-33) in the set, the second highest total for the Cowgirls in the match.

Wyoming held off the Spartans in the fourth set to take the frame 25-22. Wyoming went on a 14-6 run to open the frame. San Jose State battled back to within two points at 22-20 after a four-point run. The Cowgirls closed the set out strong and took the frame thanks to two kills from Shanahan. Wyoming added a match-high 16 kills in the set to force a fifth and deciding frame.

Both teams battled in the fifth and final set, but the Cowgirls completed the comeback with a 15-13 win in the stanza. Neither team led by more than two points in the final set. Wyoming used 11 kills in the final frame as UW hit an impressive .500 (11-1-20).

The Cowgirls return to the UniWyo Sports Complex on Wednesday hosting UNLV at 7 p.m. MT.
